Washington/Baltimore Arbitron Radio Ratings: Febuary 2012

Slipping further down - All News 99.1 could be the shortest-lived format in Washington history. Anyone remember Bright 99.5 or Classy 95? Didn't think so.

Also note Fresh leaping over Mix 107.3 in the Hot AC war. It will be interesting to see if they sustain that lead, but I'm hopeful they will. The station sounds great.

I am noting that HOT remains, well, hot! And KYS remains in the top 10, though only barely. But PGC has lost any steam it may have built up as a result of a slight course correction in the direction of HOT. This reminds me of that teaching from the Karate Kid. Walk on the left side safe, walk on the right side of the road safe, walk in the middle, squished like grape. She PGC get out of the middle of the road and either be the Top 40 contender it seems like it wants to be or the defacto Urban leader it used to be?

Bring back Mr Video Soul .

The Baltimore Arbitron Metro includes Harford and Queen Anne's counties, where many Philadelphia and Wilimington stations can be heard. That is why they sometimes show up, though very minimally, in the Baltimore numbers.

Remember, with PPM, any listening (of 5 minutes in a quarter hour) counts, so name and brand recognition do not matter. If you live in Aberdeen or Havre de Grace and scan around the dial your car radio may stop on Delaware Valley stations. Additionally, there are some commuters from Harford County to Wilimington, and even a few to Philly -- mostly these are in split-work-location households, where one spouse works in Baltimore/DC and the other goes north. If even a few of these families end up on the PPM panel, their regular listening plus other people's occasional scanning would probably be enough for Philly stations to show.

This will not happen he is more of an Urban AC personality now almost 60 years old. And WPGC goes up and down in the 6+ ratings so this is not new news. Billing is the key as far as CBS goes and why they would like better numbers in the 6 plus demo WPGC still makes money.

Also keep in mind that these are the following demos for radio (6+,12+,18-34,18-49,25-54,and35-64)so 6+ is not all that there is too the story.

Feb. 2012 was its first full month, and the station has barely been promoted at all. I think the station will have difficulty achieving its goals, but it's way too early to judge 99.1.

I do think PGC is a bit too broad- They're trying to satisfy everyone from the Katy Perry fans to the Urban AC listeners, and at some point they have to pick. They can only make money on heritage for so long, and Hot's ratings are too big to ignore. I think they will eventually go more to the Pop side.

CBS would be straight foolish to bail on urban music listeners considering a quarter of the market is black and the core that consistently shows up in their ratings. If anything, they might just drop the majority of the pop and only pick actual crossover songs while maintaining their urban lean. They know that urban music is a gold mine in this market and will always have listeners due to its larger than average black, Caribbeans, and Afro-Latinos.

6.7, 7.4, 6.0 and 6.6 are "shares."

"Cume" is the total number of different people reached by a station in a week. The NYC news stations get cumes in the millions.

WCBS (AM) cumes on average about 1.9 million and sister WINS does about 2.3 million. KCBS does about 1.8 million. WTOP has about 1.2 million (a tie in cume with KNX in LA) and WBBM CHicago cumes on average about 1.9 million.

"Share" is the percent of people who are actually using radio at a given time period who are listening to a specific station. "Rating" is the percent of the universe listening to a station and tends to be about 1/10th the share number.

There has not been an East Long Island book for several years. It's a tiny market, about 120,000 and usually called Riverhead / Hamptons.

You are likely referring to Nassau/Suffolk, which is, except for Queens and Kings boroughs, all of Long Island... and it is an embedded market inside the New York metro survey area.

Totally agree that being too broad is their problem. They need to go Urban or CHR. If they don't go CHR. some other company needs to compete against HOT.
If the tables were turned and another company owned HOT, CC long ago would have launched a direct compettor
