WASTE OF A SIGNAL?

KXYZ i tune in from time to time and I can't understand what I-Heart gets out of it.. The station has no commercials, Outdated information outdated news. No social media following .. Station would be doing better doing almost any format in Houston.. I understand it has sponsors that might not care that no one is listening but the truth is that even the 1300 in Beaumont probably has more listeners.

It's not traditional ad-supported radio. This is the future of AM in my opinion. What't in it for iHeart? It gets them access to money that they can't get for their traditional format stations:

The on-air product will be funded not just by traditional advertising, but also through financial support of what are being identified as National Founding Partners who will be able to deliver important messages to BIN’s audiences and serve as a platform for philanthropic and community outreach to build brand connection and support the Black community, as well as use it for advertising messages as needed. The launch partners are Bank of America, CVS Health, GEICO, Lowe’s, McDonald’s USA, Sony, 23andMe and Verizon.

The future of radio will not be traditional music formats with :30 spots. Especially AM radio. It's less about who's listening and more about having access to a platform to speak.

“When we can invest in opportunities that genuinely serve communities, like BIN, we are living up to our values and achieving the highest and best use of our resources,” said Meredith Verdone, chief marketing officer of Bank of America in a press statement.

I don't see this being the solution for AM. If no one listens eventually these partners will want something in return.

They already got what they wanted: A positive quote in a press release. It's all about marketing.

I agree. The traditional way of building radio revenue will become outdated soon (especially on AM radio). The way BIN is sold is as an opportunity for corporations to be "socially responsible". They're not selling ads. They're selling the ability for companies to improve their social image.

AM radio becoming the social version of "carbon offsets" seems like an innovative idea worth further exploring on dying signals.

What does iHeart get out of it? A higher ESG score. They mention it on page 12 of their annual ESG report.

Being affiliated with BIN probably helps other corporations improve their ESG scores as well.
