Wasted 50 kw AM signals

Jeez. I said XEPRS because I, personally, think it's wasted. I don't care what the ratings say. I also think WSB is too.

And I said San Diego because, when I think of The Mighty XX, I think San Diego radio station. I doubt anyone is going to say "WTKS-FM in Orlando" and get responded with "That's actually a Cocoa Beach station."

My thoughts, after a long driving vacation this summer where I listened to a lot of 50K AM stations along the way:

720 KTWN Las Vegas -- truly a waste of a great signal. Totally subpar for Vegas's strongest AM signal.

1220 WHK Cleveland

1210 WPHT Philadelphia

1090 KAAY Little Rock

Admittedly, I am not much of a fan of right-wing religious radio -- I have to admit my bias on that count. I'd agree with a previous post that WNTP in Philadelphia (990) is pretty weak programming-wise, but I think that they drop their power considerably at night from a 50 K daytime signal. KYW is not a waste of a signal as far as I am concerned, that's pretty solid programming nowadays, and not easy to find stations that are all news all the time, and do a decent job of it.

660 KTNN in Window Rock, Arizona, is an interesting station broadcasting from (and to) the Navajo reservation. It seems like a big signal for a pretty narrow segment of our population, but it's interesting to listen to for a while with its mix of traditional Navajo chant and classic country -- and serves a population that is spread over a pretty wide area of the southwest. I'll give them a pass, and say I am glad they are on the air.

KTNN barely covers the entire reservation with its signal, given the terrible ground conductivity of the land in the Four Corners. 50 kw by world standards is low power, good enough to cover a metro area, but not much else.

It is a San Diego station, and only a misanthrope would say otherwise.

All of Salem's 50kWs are wastes of space, regardless of how much the pay-to-prays pull in

KRLA/LA (daytime)
KNTS/SF
WNTP/Philly (daytime)
WHKW/Cleveland

...just to name a few.

Come to think of it, WMVP/Chicago or ESPN1000 as it's now know, the former WCFL and WLUP-AM is a total waste. They are sports with no major teams left and no listeners either.

1540-WDCD Albany, NY another 50,000 watt jesus station. (Sadly it was former 1960s powerhouse Top 40-WPTR)

1540 WDCD is a little questionable. Yes they have a lot of bible thumping programming, but they also have several hours of Contmemporary Christian Music everyday.

Other wastes of 50KW stations:

1050 WEPN NYC - 1050 ESPN Radio
1130 WBBR NYC - Bloomberg 1130
1560 WQEW NYC - Radio Disney

640 WNNZ Springfield, MA - 640 The Zone FOX Sports and ESPN Radio*

*50 KW Day/1KW nite.

ummm....as I said....a waste........

Randy Bloomquist has run quite a few 50kw stations into the ground. In less than a year, he has run off nearly 50% of the listenership on WGST/Atlanta. His predecessors did a lot of damage, but he has done the most, just like he did with WBT/Charlotte and WMAL/Washington.

I'll ask you people. Have any of you ever listened to Contemporary Christian Music? A lot of it sounds like regular secular music. They have Christian Rock/Rap/Pop, etc. A few years ago the local AM station in my town began began airing a local brokered Contemporary Christian Music show. I didn't even know the music was Contemporary Christian Music until the GM of the station told me. I was good friends with the DJ and I asked him about the show.

---->Have any of you ever listened to Contemporary Christian Music?

Yes, it is regularly played on two local radio stations. It is so syrupy it would gag a saccharine addict. The lyrics are, generally speaking, as insipid as the musical ability displayed.

Very well stated......

I would like to thank all of you for keeping this thread going!

I reject the idea that the am band is irrelevant.

The problem with these flamethrowers, for the most part, are the occupants in the offices of certain lagre corporations.

WBBR 1130 in New York. I don't know if I think it's a wasted signal, but lots of people seem to think so. The programming isn't bad, from my standpoint, but it seems to be hardly a drop in the bucket in New York area ratings. The reputation that it has, as far as I am aware, is essentially as a "loss leader" for Bloomberg (the corporation)'s many other financial and news products.

WBBR is part of branding the Bloomberg financial services. It does not haved to make money... it is actually advertising for Bloomberg.

In business, every expense decreases profits. Running a station to loose money is not a viable thing, and saves nothing. If you make less you pay less taxes on what you make. Why would you want to make less?

Like ESPN radio and Radio Disney, Bloomberg Radio is simply a brand extension intended to make the whole company make MORE money.
