After all this time, 97.9 trying to step up to K104 level. Nobody can touch or imitate K104 no matter what anybody say.

If The Beat would do some type of Marketing, maybe they could be NUmber 1. But thats not Radio One's MO

"Watch out K104?" LOL I needed a good laugh this morning.....the beat has a long way to even touch K104's ratings..check the Arbitron ratings each year K104 is number 1 in the Urban demographric for DFW. The beat has made so many failed attempts like dissing K104 with 30sec ad lib spots, their blantantly half-ass attempt to reach out to the hispanic market(Shout outs to my boy G-Spook), I'm not saying the beat is a bad station but their are dues to be paid in this industry, and they are behind on their rent.

K104 is too entrenched. The Beat will make a good showing but forget over taking a station that took years to build with the same management.
Airing promos cutting down the competition is silly, immature, and only shows how shallow and unoriginal theycan be.

Not to mention it's free promotion for K104 (not that they really need it in the first place). Why any station is insane enough to "promote" the station they are trying to go after is just plain stupid.

Actually slamming/teasing the competition can be lucrative. If done right it can bring down heritage stations in time. The key is to know when to stop slamming. Relentless slamming can back fire but i've seen some upstarts bring down huge heritage stations.

Yep.
The trick is to make sure your imaging tells your listeners what they don't (or shouldn't) like about the competition. THEN it makes sense to go after the lead dog...

IIRC, the Ticket told everybody to 'jump off the KLIF" when they started- and explained that they were sports 24-7, as opposed to KLIF's part time sports coverage...

If doesn't make sense to attack the competition if you're neck-and-neck...
But if you're WAY behind, it makes perfect sense...

True, maybe in that demographic of "talk" radio that could be possible but we are talking about a different demographic and not to mention different culture of people. K104 has always been deeply rooted in the African American community, it goes way beyond just radio ratings.....its about loyalty to the community. Like I said before The Beat is not a horrible station, in fact they have a very strong presence in the Urban community as well. Its all about FRIENDLY competition and truth be told, K104 is here to stay. Period.

The cultures don't matter- what you're trying to do is peel off the P2's and P3's of your competitors and convert them to your station...
And it doesn;t matter if your listeners are white, black, brown or orange...every station has people who listen but are ho-hum about the lead station...Those are the peeps that competiton-slamming promos are aimed at..

once again I'm not going to defend my argument any further.....and it is a culture thing!! Trust me. I've worked with both the beat and K104. Bottom line is this, whatever the beat tried to do apparently didnt work because K104 still remains number 1.
