Waterbury tower question

While heading east through Waterbury this evening along I-84, I naturally looked to the right and see the tower for (for now) analog channel 20. I now have a question as it relates to WTXX-TV: What is the short dark tower that stands next to the TV tower? I also noticed a three transmitter setup "in front" of that, close to the highway and below the level of WTXX/short dark tower? Who uses these other set ups? ???

That's the original WATR-TV Channel 20 tower. It is in Prospect. Prospect denied the plans for the new, taller tower, so WATR (by then WTXX) went a few feet over the Town line to Naugatuck and Naugatuck approved the new tower. Thus, Prospect ended up shooting itself in the foot as Naugatuck got the taxes while Prospect still ended up with a huge tower in their view!

The short tower next to the tall, channel 20 tower on the hill in Prospect was the original WATR-TV, channel 20 tower. I worked there as a master control operator back in 1978 and the channel 20 antenna was a pylon on top of that short tower (about 250' IIRC). Even that short tower attracted a lot of lightning since the ground elevation was so high.

The 3 other towers you are referring to are the WATR (AM) towers on Baldwin Avenue.

I always wondered why channels 59 and 61 and 20 make it to greenwich vaguely when NBC 30 and WFSB ch 3 do not make it down this way. I guess its just the tower location.

Actually, the unlit tower is a rental owned by Channel 20, has several tenants, cellular, FAA microwave, etc. It was put up in 92 or so as the next tower on the list is falling down.

The lit A-1 tower to the north is the original WATR-TV tower, its owned by the archdiocese / ORT. It's going on 40 years old and is literally rotted from the inside out, in 1992 it barely supported its own weight.

The "three tower setup" is WATR-AM.

Only 20 is in Waterbury. 59 is in Hamden. 61 and 30 are both in Farmington, so I'm suprised you would pick 61 up.

I could actually watch the simpsons clearly on 61 on my Pocket TV at Greenwich (toods) Point. I will miss analogue. only channel 8 will make it after the shutoff.
al little off topic but I still cannot hold a call however with a cell phone on both CDMA or GSM in old greenwich down toward the beach it will drop.

Getting this back to Waterbury or that area, is the current analog channel 20 tower going to remain standing for other broadcasters to use or will it come down, seeing that WTXX-DT channel 12 (future 20) comes from Farmington?

Key words... "lit A-1", "to the north", "original WATR-TV", "owned by the archdiocese", "40 years old"

The 1000' is NOT an A1, it is NOT to the north of the unlit rental, it is NOT the original WATR-TV tower, it is NOT owned by the archdiocese and is NOT 40 years old.

Lots of opportunities for process of elimination there.

Other than its woefully undersized, it ONLY holds up the channel 20 stick and one cellular tenant, I have no idea what they'll be doing with it. I'd imagine the loading will be considerably reduced when the 10" rigid line goes away.
