I remember when WATL was 1380 before it became WAOK back in the 50's.
They were doing block programming with pop and country and sometimes Atlanta Cracker baseball. At one time I think they were also a CBS affiliate. They also had an FM, but I can't remember the frequency.
Zenas Sears and company changed it to R&B in the mid to late 50's and I think the FM was sold to someone else. It was a successful change.

Why on earth would you think this question would get you into trouble???
______________

WATL was owned by J.W. Woodruff, who also owned WRBL AM/FM/TV in Columbus, WGPC AM/FM in Albany and (later) WAZA radio in Bainbridge.

WATL moved from 1400 to 1380 (going from 250 watts to 5,000 watts) in 1947, just as WRBL moved from 1230 to 1420. WATL was a Mutual affiliate. WATL-FM was on 97.5, and was licensed for 44,000 watts, but I don't know that they ever operated at that power level.

Woodruff sold the station to a group headed by Stan Raymond (WATL's GM) in 1954. Raymond changed the calls to WAOK, and put on a "race" format (as it was known in those days), which was programmed by Zenas "Big Daddy" Sears.
______________
