WATV 900 AM Tower Blown Down By Tornado

WATV 900 AM in Birmingham tower was completely destroyed by the April 27th tornado that hit West Birmingham. The transmitter building, a pre-fab concrete type was left unscathed.

Didn't they abandon the old tower on Finley Blvd because it was falling down?

I'm sorry to see a station get taken down like this. The tower in Pratt City was nothing to look at but I guess it got the job done. I just wish they'd kept the C-QUAM stereo on when they moved. That's when I quit listening.

As a couple years ago (maybe 08 or 09), they still were broadcasting in AM stereo, or at least I thought they were.

The tower on Finley Blvd was taken down several years ago. They lost their lease on the property. A new location on the Pratt Highway was build complete with a new solid rod tower and a concrete building similar to the ones used at cell sites. The new tower was in the direct path of the tornado that destroyed the Pratt City neighborhood and was knocked down. The building survived the direct hit.

I have never understood the logic in leasing land for an AM transmitter site. This is just another example. WATV is indeed a treasure. I enjoy listening to it when I come to Birmingham.

Where could WATV be lighted up quickly under STA?

I noticed WENN (AM) was also off the air when I was in town yesterday. Another victim of tornado damage? Their tower is up on Daniel Payne Drive, not far from Smithfield.

It'd be a good nearby temp site for WATV if it's available...

There has been a carrier on 1320 (WENN-AM) but no audio for the past two days. Obviously, their tower is still standing and their power has been restored. I wonder if they know???

I understand WATV is working on a temporary antenna to get back on until a new tower can be erected.

WENN-AM is off the air on a fairly regular basis these days. They will come back on, and once again disappear. The translator is going full-speed, as usual, though.
