I just noticed on radio-locator.com that WAVF-FM Hanahan has a new CP from December 2006 to add coverage from JUST south of Columbia all the way to Myrtle Beach! I've always thought people living in Orangeburg and places in Santee Cooper country have some luck being able to receive Columbia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach stations. Thoughts?
 
Interesting. Looks like from the projected coverage maps that their strategy is to try to put more coverage inland and send less out over the water. Either that or they were looking for a better tower rental deal.

Used to love to pick up WKQB St. George/Charleston when they were Q107. Back in the late 1980's they had a hell of a crew.
 
Hey Steve I know that Hugo did a lot of damage to KQB... Does NKT still use the same tower site that Q uses or are they on a different stick??? CC1
 
Good question. I don't know the answer to that one. They were on through most of Hugo. I was able to catch almost all of their broadcast that night, safely tucked away in the impentrable Preston College on Greene Street.
 
Hugo actually didn't do that much damage to Q107. Their studios were in North Charleston and were undamaged. As far as I know, the stick is still in St. George. Because it was so far inland, it's how they were able to remain on the air during the storm, until the power at the stick went out. Helluva time.

The NKT stick is still in Ridgeville. I think it has been there for years...just off I26...halfway between Summerville and St. George.

Looks like WAVF is finally upgrading to full "C" status and going up on one of the big TV towers north of Mr. Pleasant. Should have similar signal to 96.9.
 
I remember listening to WKQB for about a week after Hugo. I was located in Cheraw SC but had a big outside FM antenna which amazingly had not been taken down by Hugo (yeah, Cheraw was hit pretty hard). WKQB was the only radio station on the air in the Charleston area for much of that time. I'l tell you, that was some heart wrenching, compelling radio that WKQB put out during those terrible days. Those guys at KQB did an excellent job---I wonder if they ever got any recognition or reward for their public service....
 
I seem to recall that the only area radio station still on the air after Hugo was Port Royal's (now former) 99.7 WHTK, and they received all kinds of accolades.
