WAVL format flip

Don't know when this happened. . . but I just happened upon WAVL's new website. . .

http://www.liberty910.com/

Looks like they ditched Christian CHR for conservative talk. Bennett, Boortz, Ramsey (which they had even when doing music), Howard, and Batchelor. Still being operated by Evangel Heights Church. . . do you think a church would continue running this format, or could this be a prep to sell? (Even with the heavier WAY-FM format they were running, I suppose it was no match for the CCM that K-Love offers. . .)

If they aren't selling it, they may have done an LMA with someone. A lot easier to collect a check every month than to actually run the place.

Since he's known to cite a scripture or two during his financial advice program, I guess the church was sold on the show...

Now, conspiracy theorist extraordinaire John Batchelor might scare away a parishioner or two...

They could have also decided to beat the Radio Performance Tax before it went into effect. They might have been able to barter this format out and at the same time, give up their ASCAP/BMI license. They've lost a lot of money on this station, but they're not going to give it up cheap.

I hope they don't think they're sitting on some sort of gold mine. The people on the board might be the majority of the people who even know it's on the air.

Just like the folks at KZV in Washington, operators like this should get out while it's still worth something.

BTW, whatever happened to WTYM in Kittanning after the owner passed away? I know his wife sold the station he owned in the Altoona area to the WBVP owners. Last time I heard WTYM they were carrying what sounded like a local city council meeting live.

It may have been the Armstrong County school board, or Kittanning's borough council. WTYM is becoming part of the Family-Life ministry in Kittanning, which simulcasts much of what it offers over the Internet and on cable TV and also runs newscasts that draw on a throwaway four-page Monday-through-Friday "The Paper" circulated in Kittanning and vicinity. AM 1380 also is running Dr. Laura until she goes off syndication.

Also, I understand WAVL may be pretty much a one-man show these days, as in one man programming the computer, which means it can run into the sort of problem it had Sunday, when all one heard on AM 910 were public service announcements and weather reports. Then again, it's a pretty good weather service for automation. I'd like to hear a current condition and temperature on the KHB-KFB-KVE weather reports. Still, all the dead air made me want to switch to WAOB. It seems more appropriate there.

I think it has been explained here before that the dead air on WAOB is their "silent meditation" portion of their format. The sad part is I do not think anyone is joking.

On a recent trip south of Pittsburgh I noticed countless AM stations with ongoing problems. The Froggy AM in Charlerois is simulcasting the main channel at about 20 percent volume. Why DO they keep the Froggy 98.3 billboard out at the I-79 junction?

Also two AM stations in Clarksburg, WV - WPDX 750 and WOBG 1400, both appear to have gone dark. The only other AM, 1340, was attempting to broadcast what sounded like ESPN radio over a cheap phone line with a very annoying hum in the background.

Because it would cost money to take it down.
