WAVM advisor arrested for child rape (Ch 4)

(Sad if true, as we had heard of his dedication to the station. He will have
his day in court.)

http://cbs4boston.com/topstories/local_story_007135228.html

Ch 4 reports: "Maynard H.S. Teacher Charged With Child Rape

"Joseph Magno...is accused of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and indecent assault and battery on a child over 14."

A leading story on Ch 4 11 pm news. Magno teaches at Maynard High and also is
<a href="http://wavm.org/about/History/faculty_advisor.htm">
an advisor for the embattled WAVM</a> , which is fighting to keep on the air
while a religious translator covets its frequency. They briefly showed a
WAVM DJ who said Magno is a great teacher. Nobody can believe this.

Unbelievable. That is very sad news, all around. As if WAVM needed any more bad news. I am sure that Joe Magno will get an opportunity to try prove his innocence.

Unbelievable news. Ouch.

Maynard H.S. Teacher Charged With Child Rape

(CBS4) MAYNARD Joseph Magno, a teacher at Maynard High School, was arrested and charged with rape of a child Friday night, said the Middlesex District Attorney.

Magno is accused of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and indecent assault and battery on a child over 14.

The D.A. says they believe only one victim is involved at this point.

Magno will be arraigned in Concord District Court on Monday.

Article posted under fair use.

I f___ing hate the DA has no real evidence (at least via CBS4's report) but the tag of "kid toucher" will now be permanently associated with Magno.

I would have posted the entire bit but wasn't sure if it was OK. It's OK
if the c) MMVI, CBS Broadcasting is attached? Generally I try to post the
link plus a short excerpt.

Yes we definitely presume innocence as is our law (though certaintly
cases "get tried in the media"). Hey, I know the drill; even served on
jury duty up in Lawrence last Sept. myself. Could be false accusations,
could not be, but the jury decides. (A few years ago there was news when
a DJ in our area was accused of the same thing but it was proven not to be true;
a disgruntled-employee situation.)

Now an article with more substance to it is up via WBZ's site and there should
be a video link as well.

EXCERPT:

Magno is well-known and well-liked at Maynard High School. And, as the advisor to WAVM Radio, he makes quite an impression.

"Yeah, he's nice and stuff," said Danny Cassidy, a student. "Helps out with after school programs."

Magno was interviews by CBS4 in November, to talk about the station and their recent struggles with the FCC. Now, Magno is in jail and charged with indecent assault and battery and rape of a child.

"This has been going on a period of time," said Chief James Corcoran, of the Maynard Police Department.

Police say the victim came to them Thursday, with a story of abuse that allegedly went on for a long time with the popular teacher.

(snip) His bond is set at $250,000. He'll be in court Monday.

Even if Joe Magno is acquitted of these charges, or if these charges get dropped, his career at Maynard High School/WAVM-91.7 is over.

I wonder how this will affect WAVM's efforts to stay on the air.

A personal note: Although I never lived in Maynard, Magno actually has served two terms as faculty advisor to WAVM. In between his two stints at Maynard High, he worked for Cablevision Systems Corporation as the regional head of local cable programming, responsible for overseeing company's local-origination channels and compamy-owned public-access channels in the Boston area.

For a time in the early 1990's, I worked part-time for Cablevision's local programming department in my hometown of Norwood, after several years of being a rather prolific producer for their local-access channel (which included lots of behind-the-scenes work as well as being on-air to do play-by-play of local high-school hockey). Although first Linda Eppich and then Paul Norton was the person "running the show" during the time I worked for the company in Norwood, Magno was their boss.

I only met Magno two or three times. But it's been almost fifteen years since last I saw him.

Its a shame this Mango guy didn't contribute to Tom O'Reilly campaign for Governor. It would have been broomed.

Not to sound like a raving conspiracy theorist, but am I the only one who finds the timing of this a little convenient for Living Proof's Lunenburg application? I don't necessarily mean that the whole thing is staged, but all it would take is an anonymous phone call to start a giant boulder rolling.

Seems extreme, yes. But some godcasters certainly have played dirty when it comes to following FCC rules, why should playing dirty this way be any different?

I'm not entirely sure myself, but as long as it's credited and short / excerpts it's rarely a problem. Far too often the original article is removed from the website of a given news organization and thus the info is lost, which is why I post them here.

Reminder: Arbitron ratings are a no-no here.

What happened to the word "alleged" in this case?

CBS4: "Police say the victim came to them Thursday, with a story of abuse that allegedly went on for a long time with the popular teacher."

How about: "Police say the alleged victim came to them Thursday, with a story of abuse that went on for a long time with the popular teacher."

> "Yeah, he's nice and stuff," said Danny Cassidy, a student.
> "Helps out with after school programs."

That added absolutely nothing to the article. Who's writing these things?

> "This has been going on a period of time," said Chief James
> Corcoran, of the Maynard Police Department.

Again, alleged? The Chief should be asked if giving such a quote could taint the jury pool.

> His bond is set at $250,000. He'll be in court Monday.

That's extremely high, I think. What a way to spend a weekend.

Reports on the local VHF stations and on NECN today said that Magno was
arraigned at Emerson Hospital in Concord (and a pic of that was shown) and
they said they didn't know why the arraigment was held there. Ch 4 says Magno plead not guilty.

Metrowest Daily News coverage (they say that the arraignment was to be at a
court but again, he wound up being arraigned in a hospital):

Joseph,
I have been reading your posts for a long time. Without getting too personal, what do you do for a living now?
Thanks,
Tom

Right now, I do a little freelance video production.

Quite frankly, I'd like to do more of it---and I'd also like to do something again in front of a camera or microphone.

But given my situation, I'd probably have to "make my own opportunity".
