Re: WAVZ New Haven
WADS comes in loud and clear all around the New Haven area and into Bridgeport even between two big New York signals. It actually nulls away from the upper Naugatuck Valley and the northwest. If WADS aimed north, 3200 watts at 690 could probably interfere early and late in the day with Info 690 CINF in Montreal. Of course, at the rate Canadian AMs are deserting the dial, that may be a non-issue before long. Spanish religion seems to work, even without night service or being in the middle of an Arbitron metro.
LIberal talk may have missed the boat for several reasons: a more diverse audience than conservatives, an affinity for NPR among its target audience, Air America's money troubles and signals that don't come close to matching the right leaning news/talk giants all have something to do with it. Talk radio actually offered more of a variety of opinion back in the 70s when there were fewer stations. It's sad to hear the only evening talker audible across much of the dial describe the liberal ideology as a "mental disease."
Spanish music on AM is not exactly the wave of the future, either. Rhumba 1300 isn't a bad idea, but how much time will people spend with it? Relaying at least some Spanish news/talk from NYC's 1280 WADO may serve a niche for WAVZ from New Haven south. It hasn't been long since dropping English news/talk, and WSUB 980 in Groton has already switched from Spanish AC to more of a CHR approach. Time will tell if enough local advertisers support it. Whatever happens at WAVZ, the memories of WAVZ's 60s/70s heyday were great!
