WAWZ Star 99.1 cut back

Boy, after spending a few months looking to hire a Creative Services Manager they hire a guy who had been outside of radio. Now, less than 5 months later he is gone because the position has been eliminated, according to allaccess.

I always thought WAWZ had a lot of nerve asking listeners to send the money for "project tower." The "company line" was that the station would have a better signal to bring "the light" to more people. The REAL reason was that this project was to build a huge tower that they rent to various services and make a ton of money from.
There is a lot of cell phone stuff up there, and other services.
That was the real story..they never told anyone that on the air. If you're running commercials, don't ask your listeners for money. Listeners made good faith donations to erect a money making machine or dare I say, modern day tower of Babel.
For all of its supposed sincerity, WAWZ is a slick, consulted radio station, just like any station in NYC. In truth, it's about "sales not souls." Some people are being taken for a ride.

I remember when Zach Martin left to take the CSM job at WFAN...who did Star 99.1 hire? I didn't see anything about this on allaccess.

Actually you've got the story WRONG Sherlock.

They had to build the new tower because the old tower was purchased used in the 60's and over time the town of Bridgwater condemned it. I remember back in 2002 the engineer from WAWZ showed me the tower and you could actually put a screwdriver through the base of the old thing. But here's the rub their old tower was on a site right next to another tower (owned by another company) and the town of Bridgewater would only allow one tower up on the hill.

So the tower and its clients are shared by Pillar of Fire and the other owners, with the majority of the cell phone accounts contracted by the other company. That doesn't also bring up almost twenty years of legal maneuvering with the town of Bridgwater which caused the tower project budget to skyrocket into the Millions of Dollars.

WAWZ signal did improve, so no lie there. They are a tax-exempt not for profit organization and they are not making a ton of money off the tower an also lost a ton of real money when they flipped from a mostly music format to their CCM format. So before you get all high and mighty get your fact straight.

Sherlock?? What are we in...high school?

The FACT is that the tower is OWNED by Pillar of Fire (WAWZ) and MANAGED by AAT, the company that owned the old demolished tower. That info from a WAWZ staffer who says the station makes "a nice piece of change" off that tower.

My feelings are unchanged. There was, IMHO, a hidden agenda here in marketing "Project Tower." I don't care what their tax status is. If you're selling commercial time and making money from the tower, don't ask listeners for money.

This is why I have withdrawn my support.

I called you Sherlock because you claimed to know the "Real" story, and you don't. I

I followed the story in the local paper. I used to listen to WAWZ a lot in the old days, when they played the really good talk shows. These days I think they succumbed to the lowest common denomintor, just listen to their morning show it's almost as if Howard Stern found Jesus. It's horrible! That's why I pulled my support.

In all fairness....

to try to envision some vast conspiracy to bilk their listeners is both unfair, and downright mean. You just don't like commercials, who does? But I'm sure WAWZ isn't making a millions off local church ads which seems make up the majority of the lean amount of commercials they play (I think it's like 6 minutes an hour).

So grow up, and be honest. Don't invent WAWZ Staffers in an attempt to make something out of nothing. If you don't like the station don't listen.

Actually, my info does come from a staffer. Perhaps they have misunderstood the big picture. I'm only telling you what I was told. Looks like we agree on one thing..the morning show. I agree with you. Overall I think the station is too slick.(thank you John Frost)
I actually liked the "old format" better. I am very suspicious of "Christian" radio stations after having seen some of behind the scene dealings over many years.

Would it have killed them to say. "In addition to improving Star 99.1's signal reach, our new tower will enable us to raise addition funds to continue our ministry to the Tri State area." Or something like that. That would have been more honest and I don't think anyone would have faulted them.

I agree, WAWZ sure was way better in the old days. In fact there were times on WAWZ-AM .... but now I date myself

I noticed WKDN has nothing on their tower just the four bay on top, never had anything in the 30 years of its existence, is it a rule that Family radio stations have no other antennas on their towers.

Actually i am kinda suspicious of it as well since i applied for the station and i didnt get this job on the sheer fact that i think its because i am a practicing wiccan. But thats ok, i have my own morning show elsewhere now and im happier. ;D

It's my understanding that WKDN doesn't own the tower - it's
part if the AM's directional - and is owned by Beasley's WTMR.
"Hot" AM towers aren't ideal for rentals, although I think
there is something in the works. Typical old style radio
towers were just built to hold what they had to hold at the
time ... there were no cell sites back then.
