WAXY FORMAT HELP 1971 1972

Hey Guys:

Can anybody help me with some dates for WAXY. My history timeline is almost complete for 105.9 but I need some help with these:

Would anybody know the exact date or close to it

1. WAXY to Drake's Solid Gold auto format in 1971?

2. WAXY to Auto Modern Good Music format in 1972?

When I have this complete I will post my entire 105.9 history timeline here.

Thanks for your help guys. :)
T.J.

105.9 went on the air in the 60's as WFLM and was a easy listening station.Al Tedesco and Broward Broadcasting purchased the station in the late 60' and changed the calls to WIXX-FM. He then changed format to Drakes Solid Gold and the calls to WAXY and WIXX am to WEXY. WAXY continued with the oldies format and WEXY went to more top 40 and talk. RKO bought WAXY in the 1972 range and continued with the oldies format.WEXY was sold around 1976 to Jim Beattie And Celebrities Inc.RKO ran into problems with the FCC and was forced. to unload all there stations. In 1979 WEXY slowly changed to a religious format with white programing in the AM and Black gospel in the PM..Over time it went to all Black Gospel ...where it still is today ..But I still remember WIXX " THE TOP GUN IN BROWARD" with the sound effect of a gun going off..Back then WEXY was a 1kw daytimer..now 5Kw Days 800 watts night.

I am not 100% about when, or how long, the Solid Gold thing was.....but.....

I recall reading the Miami Herald or Miami News Radio section, to notice the WAXY calls on 105.9 & WEXY calls on 1520 (I don't think that WIXX AM/FM were ever in the listings prior to that). I checked them out (May '71?) and they were Drake-Chenault "Hitparade (that's one word) '71" with a musical jingle. They did play some current stuff...I do recall "Woodstock" by Matthews Southern Comfort & "Poems, Prayers and Promises" by John Denver.....if only I could remember others....maybe "Rainy Days & Mondays" by the Carpenters too.

Hey Guys:

I have come to the conclusion that WAXY's Solid Gold format came after June 1971 and was very short lived. I remember Mike Sheridan posted here about WAXY and WEXY and said that the Modern Good Music format came after WEXY changed back to country from MOR, that was Oct 18, 1971 that WEXY went back to country. Maybe WAXY 105.9 took WEXY's MOR format (since all the music was there in house already) modern it up a bit and put it on it's FM at the same time.

Any thoughts?

The "Solid Gold" and "Modern Good Music" format tapes were done by the contract engineer out of his home. He was given the old WFLM Stereo studio equipment for back money due him. I saw the stuff once, it was very nice equipment better than what WEXY had.

"Modern Good Music" was on WAXY when I started there in 1972. There were 3 guys who used to take care of WAXY from sunset till sunrise when they would turn things over to the WEXY jock. I hung around there with one of the guys till they hired me when one of the guys went into the service. I was a shoe in for the job since they didn't have to train me for it!

The sale to RKO General finally came through in January 1973 and the changes began. All of them were good!

Musta been Jan or Feb 1973, then, when WAXY first advertised on TV, debuting their 50s oldies format, with a Fonzie-esque dude calling the viewer "Daddy-O". Wish someone had that TV ad.....

You just reminded me of the "WAXY Wagon". It was an old Brink's Truck that was the official station vehicle (solid gold-Brinks Truck get it?)

Hey Guys:

I found this article on line and that I had saved. Kind of gives you an idea about the history of 105.9 from 1960 to 1985. GOOD STUFF. Here is the link

http://www.larrygrinnell.com/?p=321 I hope it works. If not please let me know.

Mike Sheridan: Question. Do you remember the month in 1972 you started working for WAXY? I am trying to wind down the exact date the Modern Good Music format started at WAXY.

Thanks

T.J.

Wow what a blast from the past to see Larry's blog on the early days of WAXY. I can't even begin to remember when "Modern Good Music" started. I do know that Drake's "Hitparade" was on in 1970 and 1971. So sometime in early 1972 would be a good guess. I don't think "Solid Gold" was around for long. I joined WAXY officially in November 1972, I replaced Larry Grinnell when he joined the Air Force. I had been hanging around the station so I didn't need to be trained. I had probably been hanging around since May or June of 1972 and I know it was "Modern Good Music" then.

Thanks Mike for the reply!! I have come up with a time line

WAXY 105.9 Oldies "Solid Gold" October 1971 to April 1972.

WAXY 105.9 AC/Oldies "Modern Good Music" April 1972 to April 30, 1973.

Glad you liked the article. I am glad I posted it.

Thanks again

What a blast this thread is about WIXX/WAXY/WEXY . . . the "WAXY WAGON!" Good days. Good times. Stations like WIXX or WBSS 980, and 790 as “WFUN” are all gone, huh.

Anyway. Was reading on Radio Online that Crawford Broadcasting purchased the 0.55kw Spanish KNSN-AM 1240 San Diego from Multicultural Broadcasting for $1.5 million, this was back this year, on July 2014.

Which got me thinking about ‘ol WEXY (back in the country station day as WIXX as the “Top Gun of Broward”). Looks like WEXY 1520 was most recently co-located with WJCC 1700 and 1210 WMNA on 58th Street off the Palmetto in the Multicultural Miami complex.

These days, looks like all are LMA’d. JCC 1700 flipped from Spanish to Haitian as “Radio Mega” and the studios are in North Miami on 167th. WMNA studios flipped from Spanish talk and music, and now piping in ESPN Desportes off the ‘bird, with its studios back, co-located with the transmitter and tower in its old digs on 71st outside Little Haiti. WEXY seems to be hanging onto block format-time buys from preachers and various ethnics.

I remember when WJCC 1700 first went on air and tried to run Imus with an English sports format and was “the Fan.” I can’t remember what 1210 was way back when.

To me, anytime a company starts LMA’ing stations, that is, turning over operations and programming to someone else, and giving up on creating their own original programming -- that’s a sure sign of being fed up with the station (s), giving up and throwing in the towel. They probably want to sell, but no one wants the stations. And who would want them? Ethnic groups, churches surely. But very few religious groups can afford to make that large of a purchase. Religious non-profits can barely swing an LPFM, let alone full power stations.

If WAXY, WMNA or WJCC were put on the block, wonder what they’re worth individually. What would the owners ask, what would someone offer for them?

When you look at Seaview 960 netting $850,000 (and that’s with two translators tossed in), and 900 Sugar selling (in package deal with 93.5 Lobo to sweeten the pot) for $555,000 . . . I just can’t see WEXY or WJCC or WMNA (or any AM outside of guys like Beasley, Cox, or iHeart) going for that much, not even half of the Sugar/Radio Lobo deal.

Yeah, station prices are based on multiplier against the station’s sales for the year, but how good can the “sales” be, really.

But still, who wants an AM these days? With a FM translator in the package, they have an appeal. But stand alone AMs? Nada. Expect for facilities like Seaview 960 that have actually programming, sales, airstaff, spots, great on-air product and listeners . . . unlike most of the AM’s who audience is comprised of the friends and relatives of the clients doing the block time buys.

At this point in the game, if you own a little AM like the three mentioned, I think you’re pretty much stuck with them; with no choice but to pass off the headache on someone else, and LMA the hassles to someone else.
