Way-FM is coming to Louisville

I saw Way-fm is buying WLRX 104.3 for 1 million.

Another full power translator. It's interesting that Blue Chip purchased the Charlestown signal for $2 million back in 2003, four years later all Radio One can get for it is a million. Radio One really botched these stations, it's not surprising their stock is trading for just over three bucks now.

You should see the mess radio one created in los angeles with there one yes one station. It use to be 100.3 the beat now it is V-100.They can't play ball very well in market 54 never mind market number 2.

Now maybe WAY-FM can pick up WAKY or WJIE to give them a full-market signal. ;D

Mainline did pick up the 105.1 signal from Radio One, so I don't think they'd get rid of it so soon. I don't think the FCC lets you flip stations like people flip houses anyway.

I really hope there's room for both WAY-FM and Air1, but it wouldn't surprise me if one of them ultimately flips (most likely the latter to K-Love). There's now three Christian ACs (WJIE, WRVI, K-Love) and two Christian CHRs in the market (WAY-FM, Air1).

Not really. There's a fair amount of local content on each WAY-FM station (underwriting, mornings, traffic reports, etc.). There is quite a bit of sharing between stations (Bowling Green and Nashville can be indistinguishable at times), but with Louisville being in a different time zone than Bowling Green, WAY may actually have to fly this one solo, unless if it can be voice tracked along with the South Florida stations.

WAY-FM will be losing an affiliate of its CHRSN service, WFBR-LP in Mt. Washington, KY, once WQKC-FM completes its move to 93.9 FM.

After the previous 104.3 formats of Hot 104, then the Eagle, then LRS, won't there have to be some sort of exorcism performed?

At last check, the calls WAYI and WAYP are free for the taking. There are of course, numerous WAY_ calls that could be arranged if it is cleared with the appropriate TV or AM station.

Perhaps sprinkling of holy water on the transmitter? Just stay away from the high voltage plate power supply. Maybe the sacrificial Optimod? I have seen a couple of Optimods that looked like they had been given as a burnt offering.

I think there is room for both WAY-FM and Air 1. Air 1 has a stronger young female appeal and a tighter playlist. WAY-FM has more features in their programming which may be able to draw male listeners who do not necessarily enjoy Air 1. The biggest problem with Air 1 is that they don't have a strong presence in this market with their two LPFM signals. The 88.9 FM signal is basically useless outside of New Albany. This signal is iffy in Clark County, Indiana and is basically gone in Louisville. The 104.7 signal covers some of the suburbs fairly well. However, both Air 1 signals can't reach the central and southern portions of Louisville. The Way-FM signal will have a greater signal advantage inside the Louisville area.

As far as Christian AC, WJIE will remain strong due to it's local presence and heritage in Louisville as well as several counties south of Louisville. However, WJIE's directional signal is not as strong in southern Indiana and K-Love's signals at 91.5 and 95.1 will be beneficial in reaching Christian AC listeners in the southern Indiana area. I just hope that WJIE will be able to resolve some of their technical issues.

Christian chr is my favorite radio format but I do not listen to either air1 or wayfm much because they have tight playlists and there are no local stations where I am in Illinois either. So I could be wrong but this is how see both stations. It differs a little from the above. Way-fm tries to sound cool, hip and exciting to appeal to young people in their teens, 20's and young 30's. To me it is like they are going for teenagers at night because they try to sound so hip with callers and interviews and screaming. I think most adults 40 and up would find them at night not listenable. There are exceptions for those who like youth group type appeal with high energy. With me turning 40 this year I find it irritating they try to sound cool. The funny thing is the music is basically just the same music that is on christian AC radio except it is the top testing songs over and over so a very short playlist. Another difference which I did not like when I heard them was they will play 3 different DC Talk songs or another cool artist in the same hour. At least they will try and make every artist sound cool. So where most stations are playing one song by at artist at a time on their playlist way-fm will be playing several and even in the same hour. And with the short playlist it sounds like they are only playing songs from a few artists only, like DC Talk or Mercy Me, Casting Crowns. The way-fm in Fort Collins, CO is the only way-fm that is chr like air1.

Air1's announcer style is calmer but the music christian chr with some upbeat praise music which is my favorite kind of music. So air1 is hotter than way-fm except in Colorado but the presentation by air1 is more for adults. Air1 has a tight playlist but is wider than way-fm's. I much prefer air1 myself. Air1 will not play songs that are too loud for the most part which fits my tastes. But because of that people who want to hear loud rock or rap to appeal to kids are mad and so air1 has sold out to them and so they do not like them. But way-fm does not play loud rock and rap either and is even softer than air1. Air1 does go after females like almost all christian radio does.

Way-fm Louisville will now have the better signal so they will have a much greater advantage. I wish Air1 would have bought 104.3. Air1 did just apply to move the 104.7 on the Indiana side south right across from the southwest side of Louisville. But translators are too weak to have a large audience.

If the above is true, then Louisville does not need another Contemporary Christian Music station. It seems like WAY-FM, or one of the current CCMs, will end up being a big waste. Not all Christians are a big fan of CCM, including me. So, there has to be room for another Christian station besides a CCM outlet. Louisville does not have a full-time Christian Talk/Teaching outlet since Salem has limited that format on WFIA. A station like St. Louis' KSIV or Houston's KHCB would definitely offer unique programming compared to the current Christian outlets.

WFIA AM 900 is teaching and talk 24 hours a day M-F. For some reason, they play music on the weekends.

Yes, WFIA-AM 900 is 24 hours teaching and talk during the week. However, the 7pm-5am block are mostly repeats of the daytime schedule, except for a live call-in program from midnight -2am. When Salem purchased AM 900, they eliminated a lot of programs and merged a great portion of the daily schedule with their sister station 94.7 FM. I don't understand why Salem is simulcasting AM 900 with music on the weekends when it can be found in living stereo on 94.7. There are plenty of quality programs available that can help boost the AM 900'stalk/teaching format on the weekends and evenings.

In the last book Little WFIA AM had a 0.7 12+, 10,000 watts WKJK had a 0.8 12+.
That is very good for what WFIA does, as a Christian Talk and teaching station that plays
Southern Gospel on the weekend. WFIA's ratings are better than WCVX in Cincinnati who pulled
a 0 zero 12+ with the same 1000 watts we have. In Columbus, Ohio, WRFD a 10,000 watt
Christian Talk and teaching as a 0.5 12+ in the ratings. WAY fm will not be affecting
WFIA am or Fm, it will affect WJIE and our WRVI. you can go to www. wayfm.com and
see what they are all about. It is alot like KLOVE which is in Lexington on 96.3.
They don't sound bad, are much more current than our WRVI, and will pose a problem
for WJIE.

Just a few facts for everyone.

Matt Hahn of Ohio is the pick for GM/Sales-Underwriter guy at Way-Kentuckiana (104.3/WAYI).... Ops/Programming person should be announced, soon!!! ::) Matt has been GM at 95.1/The River in Mid-Ohio (Part of the WCVO group) and was the GM of Way-Fm/Clarksville-Fort Campbell/Hopkinsville... Great guy coming back on board with a great group.. Wonder who, from the past, might join him???? They need a 'silly' guy that climbs towers and jumps in rivers... Humm? ;D
