WAY-FM now available in Birmingham

Surprised no one has mentioned this, yet, but WAY-FM finally did a "for reals" launch in Birmingham after running on a 10-watt move-in translator. It's now up to 180 watts from Red Mountain, W210CA at 89.9 MHz.

Earlier my interest was piqued when I saw the parent station was WBHJ, but it turns out it never moved to the commercial band. I got confirmation that Jamz is now running HD, and it's feeding WAY-FM via the HD2 subchannel.

I wonder if it'll put a dent in WDJC at all, since they seem to run similar formats.

WDJC is a 100,000 watt powerhouse, that covers a huge area of north and central Alabama.

WAY FM Birmingham however is a low powered repeater station.

WDJC is soccer mom leaning.

WAY FM is more youth leaning.

We might have ourselves a little 'ol battle for the CCM audience in Birmingham going on.

Due to the limited coverage of WAY FM however, I don't see them overtaking the more powerful and established WDJC.

Noah would be proud. They say they're running "40 days and 40 nights of commercial-free music".

I was able to listen to them in my car into Helena, although the signal was breaking up by the time I reached the intersection of Hwy. 17, 52 and 261.

Driving south, I have heard the WAY-FM signal good all the way to Alabaster. Once I reach the Shelby County Airport exit, the signal begins to break up. I can receive the station at home here in Calera with a fairly good signal.

I don't believe WAY-FM would have much impact on WDJC, although I wish they would. WDJC is more Christian AC; WAY-FM is Christian CHR. Still, it's much better than being stuck having to listen to WDJC all day, with the 10 minute Moman and Associates/DJ chatter and the "Crawford Gripe" editorials which air what seems like every hour. When I get home to Calera and WAY-FM is no longer listenable, I tune into Jemison's WPJN, which does contemporary christian and worship music.

Has anyone heard as to whether the new translator on Red Mtn. at 96.1 (W241AI) is going to air some type of K-Love programming from WERC-FM HD3? Someone on the board mentioned it a while back...that it was some sort of agreement with EMF and Clear Channel about airing K-Love on the 105.5 HD3 channel and rebroadcasting it on 96.1...similar to this arrangement where Cox broadcasts WAY-FM on WBHJ HD2 and relays it to 89.9.

That's awesome indeed.

Glad that Calera and the metro Birmingham area can get a variety of CCM on the radio dial.

Still trying to work on getting our first one going, as I post this.

Hope to have something in the works, by this time next year.

P.S. Love your site Passtheword.  It's awesome indeed!

B.T.W. I have checked out the new WPJN from Jemison.  That radio station is awesome indeed.  Love what they stand for.  I usually check them out, while I'm parked at Dr. Martin's Dentist office in Maplesville Alabama.  Heard one of my all time favorite singers being played, during a recent visit.  Hope they will continue to play the music of Mr. Kevin Derryberry.  Love that man and his musical presentation.  He's awesome indeed.

Yes, RDP, it's great that we now have other options for contemporary christian music here in Bham other than WDJC. We haven't had much choice since Reality 101 left the airwaves about 10 yrs ago. :)

Thanks for the comments about the site, too. It's been a project I've wanted to do for a long time...a labor of love. I'm 44 yo and I like "elevator music"...what can I say?? lol ;)

Way-FM and WDJC do have quite a different sound in comparrison. Of course, Way-Fm isn't interested in taking down WDJC. They only want to spread their message to as many as they can. This is a great thing for Way-Fm and I congratulate them. I enjoy Way-FM here in Huntsville, and I'm sure many will enjoy it in Birmingham too.

Does anyone know if they are just simulcasting one of their other main frequencies like their other standard translators, or are they promoting this as its own station as "Birmingham's 89.9 Way-FM"? They certainly could make it it's own station since it is a simulcast of an HD-FM so I don't see why they wouldn't. Just curious since I can't pick it up where I am right now.

Wish we had them here in Selma.

Still trying to bring our first and only voice for all things CCM, to this community.

Hope that 2013 will be year I can get it done.

To those who have WAY FM, I hope the presentation will continue to bless you.

Love to check them out, when visiting Montgomery.

They do things just right.

P.S. Can't forget about K-Love.  Their radio station is awesome as well.  May be a bit softer than WAY but still like to check them out, when visiting Montgomery.

They are promoting it as "Birmingham's 88.9 Way-FM". The coverage area is decent too... I heard them today on AL-257 north of Jasper between Curry and Arley.

That's good. Yea, I looked at the coverage map for it and it's pretty impressive for a translator. It will do well I think.

By having the HD-2 feed they are able to 'localize' the signal and not just repeat a satellite station from a far.. [Since translators can't originate their own programming but can via HD-2s]

Now the programming aired is the "WAY Media Network Services Feed" which originates out of the Nashville studios. [Wally mornings, Jeff Connell Mid days, Melissa Moore afternoons, Stu Gray at nights and Marcia Ware overnights].

It's been a few years since I have heard WDJC but my understanding (since I know how way fm does things) that their quite different in on air presentation... I am confident that Way FM is there to make an impact in the market and likely reach those who would not listen to a station such as DJC might check out way fm)

There is "some" music overlap with DJC but not 100%.

W222BK (10 watts, 92.3 MHz, in Pelham) has been sold to Cox and I believe an arrangement with WAY-FM is in place for it to receive programming from WBHJ-HD2 as well. Can anyone in the Pelham area say if this translator is carrying WAY-FM yet? Last time I was in town, many months ago, it was relaying WZZN The Zone.
