Most likely more technical issues with K38IZ-D's new digital transmitter. I tuned it in on 38 tonight with no problem. However, the pixelation has returned with a vengeance, making the station, for the most part, unwatchable (nothing has changed there). It looked like, for the past couple weeks, that they had did something to improve the picture quality (better quality cables? - before, there was interference and oversaturation of color), but now that the pixelation is back, it's hard to tell that they did anything.

My tv sill shows K38IZ-D as channel 12.1.

Sometimes you get that, apparently. The DTV stick for my laptop insists on displaying both feeds of KUTP as 45.2; none of my other televisions do. It's the darndest thing.

I've never seen K38IZ-D as anything but channel 38. Originally as 38.3, but now as 38.1. Also, 38.3 maps separately than 38.1. If I tune to 38, 38.2, 38.4 or 38.5 (their website indicates that they want to host 5 subchannels - I think they should concentrate on running 1 first), the TV switches to 38.1, but if I tune to 38.3, it stays there, but with no viewable content.

Strictly opinion:
I notice they're now using both calls in their IDs - K53GF and K38IZ. They've had that "KGF channel 53" identification for some time now; I would have thought it would have been better to get an -LP call sign that incorporated those letters - something like KGFX-LP - and use PSIP, allowing them to continue using channel 53 as their ID and keep the "KGF" brand. That's similar to what "KDR channel 64" did over 10 years ago, when they took the call sign KDRX-LP as they were preparing to move to channel 48.

dhett:

What does TSReader say about the K38IZ-D signal? That might tell you something about why it's acting the way it is.

Nothing unusual on TSReader - just the primary feed on Program 1, tuned to channel 38, as expected.

I'm guessing it's just left over from when the signal was originally on 38.3. I get other odd "channels" with KAET, such as 29.5 and 29.6 on one TV and 29.11 and 29.12 on the other, none of which appear on my laptop.

The KAET ones are UpdateTV, but they should show up in the stream.

I would guess so. Not sure what else could explain something like that.

They did not, though. I was getting those when I sent you the TSReader output for KAET. 29.11 and 29.12 on one TV, 29.5 and 29.6 on the other, and nothing at all on the laptop, from where I ran the TSReader.

Some things just cannot be explained. "Voodoo Electronics" is what we call it.

That's the capture you sent me, UpdateTV shows up very clearly in that capture. Program 11 and 12. If a receiver is handling PSIP correctly, those "subchannels" shouldn't show up at all, otherwise they show up as blank subchannels.

I rescanned the channels on my tv and my tv now shows K38IZ-D as channel 38.1
