Kind of fun to look back at Fybush's year in review pages and to see what was on, what the rumors were, etc.

1995

WRKO picked up the Celtics as the team didn't like the anti-Celts talk on WEEI. As for 850 the
Fabulous Sports Babe was on mid-days...yeah, who needs local talk! WKOX 1200 changed to
talk including Gene Burns by ISDN line from SF and they applied for a power increase to 50kW.
(That took awhile to happen didn't it!)

WEGQ 93.7 wanted to put a tower up in Middleton. Later got one in Peabody. Country on 96.9,
smooth jazz on 99.5

>>102.5 WCRB -- There might be a format change here...in 97 years. What can you say about a station that's owned by a trust...which legally commits it to remain classical until 2092?

Uh...yeah...but on what freq? :)

WBCN 104.1 picked up the Pats and Howard Stern complained about being run tape delayed at
night. Chuck Laquidara was still in morning drive.

WKLB 105.7's country format was likely do be dumped--and the rumors had it going "hot talk"

890 WBPS was running prime sports. WERS banned most rap songs due to violent language.

At the time I used to catch some of the early part of Stern's show (the best part actually, where he reviews the morning news) on WWKB out of Buffalo and maybe some BCN at night after I did an evening run. Now...haven't heard Howard in like seven years?

Give Howard credit, he's still putting in a solid day's work on satradio these days. By chance I've caught a few snippets of him on Sirius here and there over the past few weeks and whatever it was he had ten years ago, he's still got it strong today.

Personally, I'm not really a fan. Certainly not enough to pay $14/mo for. But I can't lie, I was laughing pretty hard to the bits I've heard. Man's a genius at his craft, that's for sure.

Yeah, but only 4 of those "solid" days per week. ;-)

107.9 WXKS -- Pyramid Broadcasting, which took Kiss 108 from worst to first back in 1979, cashed out this year... selling Kiss 108, WXKS-AM, WJMN, and its stations elsewhere to Evergreen for a nice big chunk of cash (into the 9 figures). Pyramid honcho Richie Balsbaugh had a strong emotional attachment to the Kiss format and jocks...but will Evergreen show the same restraint in the face of flat ratings at Kiss? Meanwhile, sister station WJMN continues to soar, prompting rumors that Evergreen might try to consolidate the CHR and urban audiences at Jam'n...and take Kiss in another direction. Should be an interesting year at Kiss headquarters, especially when WJMN moves from its current rented Waltham digs up to the WXKS facility in scenic Medford.

Haha... well, no flip for KISS 108 yet and it's now the top station in Boston.

Give Howard credit

One, I don't particularly care for Howard's brand of radio.

That said, I believe the two most important and influential figures in radio in the 2nd half of the twentieth century were Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh. They were the game changers

TSB

Maybe people-wise, but content/music-wise, I'd say MTV nuked content/music (the music is just electropop soundtrack for the videos) and——in terms of relevance/necessity of radio to hear music——the internet and IPod are in the process of royally flushing its toilet. :-\
