WayFM Rant

I was in Dyersburg yesterday and didn't hear anything on 99.3 other than KF99 in Fulton/Union City, which is normal for there. I still get the feeling something is only on long enough to stay legal, and the translator is probably up for sale or already sold.

W233AF 94.5 Hendersonville, TN has a CP to move to 89.9 which they filed a license to cover on 05/24/2012 so maybe it on 89.9 now? This is the translator that they had applied to move to 105.1 and then changed it to 89.9. Strangely I can't find 89.9 in the fcc database but I do see the license to cover from 5/24/2012 that has not been granted yet.

I just heard WayFM telling listeners to check out Hippie Radio. Well, actually they were referring to their old 94.5 translator in Hendersonville. You would think they'd pull that spot by now.

Speaking of Way, there used to be a construction permit for a translator listed for 105.1 Hendersonville, but I don't see it on radio-locator anymore. I don't know why or how 105.1 would work, as Solid Gospel has a fair signal in that area. I'm sure I've mentioned this on here before, but you used could pull wayFM to Gallatin until 88.5 would bleed over, but now as soon as you pass Exit 7 or 8 on Vietnam Vets 88.7 disappears. Not splatter, just GONE! Very strange. Are they EVER going to cover Hville, Gallatin, and White House? I assume Portland may get some of Bowling Green 88.1. Gallatin no longer can due to that new station in Lebanon.

I LOVE the station, especially Wally, but it drives me INSANE that I have to stream a station only 5 miles south, yet can pull them in nearly to the AL line. I realize they have a directional pattern, but wow!

For those that say Nashville is covered up in that format - I have to disagree, as you can't pickup WayFM in the NE sections of the county and the Fish is like Mix vs. the River in format comparison.

While I like having 89.9 free for part 15 operations, I'm actually VERY excited about the chance that WayFM may pick it up. With KLOVE coming in they need any signal they can get. I'm in Old Hickory and can nearly see the Hendersonville translator tower across the lake from my house. 88.7 is absolute no-go at home though. Nothing but WVCP splatter and static...and I'm still in Davidson County! WKOM comes in some, Hopkinsville, Cookeville, Manchester, and sometimes Chattanooga - but no 88.7. Fingers crossed because that 94.5 frequency wasn't worth a flip!

I was looking at the coverage maps for WAYM 88.7 and WVCP 88.5. You are just outside of the 60 dbu of both stations. Since WVCP is HD that may cause enough interference to block 88.7. Within the edges a stations 60 dbu that has HD the side channels are blocked. That would be from 88.3 to 88.7. But you are slightly outside WVCP's 60 dbu so I do not know if that is your problem or not.

If you are trying to get WAYM 88.7 at home you should try an outdoor FM antenna on a roof or attic and a good tuner that rejects adjacent frequencies like the Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner. But they are not being made anymore and so are hard to find. So using a car radio like a Pioneer or JVC that rejects adjacent frequencies almost as good as the Sony XDRF1HD for a car and also converted for home use with a Dc adapter would greatly help.

Buy a McIntosh MR 78 or HH Scott 312d and that deep fringe yagi and rotor. Keep the tuners maintained by pros and aligned and serviced as needed. Sorry good reception costs top dollar.

I, also, use 88.9 to stream music when I am working out in the yard..that is, unless the big band pirate is on, then, it is worthless. He is on tonight with a dead carrier.

I have the opposite problem you have, I like WVCP in the morning on my drive to work, but it gets killed by WAY-FM on 88.7 and 88.3 here in Davidson County around Opryland. How many transmitters do they need? I like 94.5, but not in the morning...don't care for hi-lites of last night's American Idol contest or Fox News.

I'd say....88.3 is a full powered FM licesned facility with a directional signal and tower between COL-Clarksville and Dickson (Way-Fm)...

Skippertthomas your bio says you were working for WSRX 89.5 Naples which was sold to Way-FM. So I guess you lost your job. What are you doing now?

Need to update the profile.... Been in an interim Operations Manager's position with a family AM/FM News-Talk/AM and AC/FM... Moving next week to work with the Dakota Radio Group.... Saginaw and the east Space Coast of Florida can't match the pay in the new boom areas in the upper plains.... I will be doing Classic Country on the biggest AM signal in South Dakota and Voice Track late afternoons on their Hot-AC (Pierre)..... They have five signals on four formats (Classic Hits and Country also there).... Neat place and look to work in local Church stuff, as well... Glad Way got 89.5 in Naples, as they have tuned up that transmitter nice... Gets to North Fort Myers before crackling... When I was there it only got to Page Field in Fort Myers before crackling and hissing... The 100.5 signal off the Charlotte/Lee County Line (WINK-TV Tower) sounds fabulous! Clean on a standard car radio from 178 just below the Toledo Blade exit on I-75 to the Bonita Springs city limit line at about the 120 mile marker.. The Fringe north is just past Venice and to just past Immokalee Road exit in North Naples, before another translator at 100.5 cuts in....

I'm glad you found work. It sounds like you get around.

Thanks for the reception report of WAYJ new signals. It frustrates me how WAYJ does not even mention they are now on the HD2 channel of WOLZ 95.3 with their tower just south of Fort Myers along I-75. That is the best signal to listen to. On their facebook page a few people wrote in and said they could not longer get WAYJ. A lot of people have poor FM tuners and antenna's but an HD radio would help them. It is dumb and frustrates me.

People can get an HD radio from Best Buy for $50. I have over a dozen HD radios. Yet no mention of HD on their webapges. It is the same in all WAY-FM markets and EMF markets too. It is very hard to even find what HD signals EMF or WAY is on because both are silent about HD. They are afraid of confusing people because most do not have HD radios. But how is the technology supposed to be used then if we act like it does not exist. Its dumb not to promote and take advantage of HD.

I also wanted to add that WAY-FM's answer to someone who can no longer get WAY-FM in South Florida on Facebook is to buy an I-Phone for who know's how much $$ and then pay $80 a month for a data plan to hear WAY-FM. Yet there is no mention of buying an HD radio for $50 one time. It is just dumb.

I also hear a lot how people say they can not afford an HD radio yet will pay $80 a month for a smart phone.

The reason EMF and WAY MEDIA do not mention these HD2's is because they are "leasing" them to Feed translators.

However, at least with WAY I have heard them ID the HD2's in the areas they are using them (you must legally ID an HD-2 each hour like you do with your full powered calls) I frequently listen to WAY's portland translator and they each hour ID the HD-2 they lease from Clear Channel in that market to feed their translator. [They do the same in Denver with an HD-2 they lease to feed a translator]

I know their HD2's are leased to feed translators but the HD2 signals are actually stronger and better sounding than the translators. And just because they are leased does not mean you can't promote them and list them on your website of station frequencies to listen to. Or when people complain on facebook that they can't pick you up anymore suggest they try the HD2 signal instead of pretending it does not exist.

I know the only way of knowing what HD2 they are only to try and listen to the top of the hour legal ID. That is how I found out about WOLZ 95.3 HD2. But they could try some on air promotion too mentioning the HD's at times other than legal ID's.

When you say Denver I think you mean Colorado Springs.

If the HD2's are never mentioned (even if leased) outside of legal ID's it is hard to know they exist. No wonder a lot of people do not know about HD radio. For someone who has trouble picking up the analog frequency or someone like me from out of town it is not very convenient to find out what HD 2 or 3 stations they are on. Especially for EMF stations where the only online streams are the national stream so you can't hear the legal ID for an individual station. EMF listed some HD2 on their online frequency list at one time but took them off because they were afraid of confusing people I was told by them.

I'm not the fan of WAY some people are but I do wish Klove had gotten into the market. It's a far better run organization. I was told they didn't think Nashville was large enough to support both Fish and Klove.

From what I've seen K-LOVE tends to not go into areas that already have strong CCM stations, and Nashville is definitely in good shape with WAY-FM and the Fish stations. I guess that's the reason WNAZ wasn't able to continue. Atlanta, Birmingham, and Dallas are other cities with strong CCM stations that K-LOVE hasn't gone into.

Dallas has a station using the K-LOVE (KLUV 98.7) moniker.

They can't go into the market because of that reason, not because of competition. Same goes with Los Angeles.

Why can't Christian listeners invest in better tuners and antenna systems to receive their favorite station? Classical and Jazz listeners do this often. A question rarely asked. Why don't they buy music? Invest a little bit.

I found out what happened with WAY's translator in Dyersburg that is moving to 99.3. According to Radio-locator it will now be a translator for WQAK 105.7 in Union City. (Another unnecessary Thunderbolt translator Firepoint.) I'm disappointed that they've sold but I'm not surprised. A couple of months back I caught them on in Dyersburg for what was probably the last time before changing to 99.3. From what I was able to find out they have to be on by Aug. 1st. So WAY is pretty much out of West TN except for right along the Tennessee River if you can get them from Clarksville or New Johnsonville. I still love WAY-FM, but I'm disappointed in them leaving.  :-X

The closest translator they would have, I think, is Murray, KY.

The Murray translator came on at about the same time that the Jackson, TN translator should have come on but were sold instead. I've never understood why they went ahead with Murray but backed out of Jackson, other than possibly K-LOVE's dominance in the area.

I think you're right about the K-Love presence. PLUS, there's a small powered local CCM station up here in a small town north of Murray. It is a former member of WAY's "Christian Hit Radio" Satellite Network.
