Ways to compare stream popularity?

TuneIn has trending. Streema has numbers.

What are ways you compare the popularity of audio streams by genre/niche or by geography of the listeners?

I am working to identify the most popular English language news/talk stations around the world for possible inclusion in my http://1RadioNews.com Android app. While I have added some niche station, taking a less is more approach means I need do a great job focusing on what is most popular.

As a radio news junkie consumer trying to highlight the most compelling and interesting stations in countries around the world, I spend a bit too much time on this. I'd also like to apply my filtering to U.S states and Canadian provinces as I try to ID stations at the intersection of local programming and popularity.

Thanks,
Steven Clift

Shoutcast has more stations than Icecast and even though it's not scientific, but you could go to the Shoutcast website, and see how many listeners are listening under specific genres. I would go to "Talk" and then to "News" and I'd check out "Political" as well. Spot check for at least a week or two......do so at different times of the day and compare weekends to weekdays, etc.

I run a conservative talk radio station and since it's internet only, late nights and mornings until lunch time are the busiest during weekdays. Weekends are a lot busier. Again late night and mornings are the best and even though things drop off in the afternoon and early evening, the drop off isn't near as much as it is during the week. Consistently our best day is almost always Sunday. Saturday's are usually the 2nd most popular days, but sometimes Monday takes 2nd. Tuesday through Friday are about the same in terms of TTSL (Total Time Spent Listening).

Thanks. What do you think of "trending" on the TuneIn app?

I always notice a few odd ball stations you wouldn't expect like sermons from Ghana with really bad audio.

Also, what radio sites send you the most listeners?

Steve

I've never paid much attention to the "trending" stuff, although I guess I should. Our listeners are 90+ from the USA. Canada is generally #2, then there's the UK, Germany and Australia. We also get quite a few from places were US military bases are located. As for as the apps or websites.......Tune-In (19.7k followers) is always near the top and then of course iTunes, etc. One source that is growing fast is Roku. Most of our listeners come through our Shoutcast server, but we have a flash player (Wowza) on the website that brings in additional listeners. Conservatively 10% more listen this way, but it can often be 15-25% more, especially on weekends. We're listed on at least a dozen websites. I'm guessing that besides the above, TalkStreamLive would be one of the biggest.
