WAZX AM 1550 Back on the Air

After more than a year of silence, I heard WAZX AM 1550kHz back on the air at their full daytime power, 50,000 watts, on Monday, August 3. The station was playing oldies and classic rock music nonstop except for a station ID at the top of the hour in English as "WAZX Smyrna". It sounds like a testing period before actual programming.

From the FCC "Silent AM" list
AM WAZX SMYRNA GA 8/4/2008 22983

They had to get back on the air before 8/4/2009 (1-year) or they loose their license.
Run it with "normal" programming for a couple days, notify the FCC, then shut it off for another year with a another "silent" notification.

I don't expect much from 1550 but they were playing some good music yesterday, some good oldies mixed with standards. My guess too they were playing around to keep it licensed.

The station was sold to local Night Club owner who is supposed to operate the station soon. Not sure what the format will be. She is Korean, but runs a Spanish night club. The station was blasting yesterday but not so much today.

The station seemed to be off the air as monitored at noon on August 12. In recent days, the signal level seemed to have gone down a bit from when I first heard them back on the air on August 3.

WAZX has a strong directional antenna pattern NE-SW from their new transmitter location near Powder Springs. When the signal from WAZX was on the air the last several days, it seemed to be much stronger at my work location in Alpharetta than my home location in town near Druid Hills.

They were coming in loud and clear out in Snellville. As I drove closer to town, it became hit or miss. By the time I reached North Druid Hills it sounded rough.

Any idea as to the type of programming they'll end up carrying? Atlanta already has a large number of Spanish/Mexican stations and has three or four Asian stations.

That is what was just said. Why is it stonger east of the city, when North Druid Hills and Midtown are basically in the same area?????????????....

You are very good. That was just said. I was merely giving my first hand testament to what a previous post had pointed out which may also answer the question you raise as to why the signal is stronger in points east of the city.

Now it has been off for the last two days. I actually enjoyed the format better than 106.7...Signal, again, just sucks intown...Why are they so directional????

1550 will never amount to anything so I wouldn't get use to it.

You listen to WGST, don't you?

It was my turn yesterday. :)

The station was on the air again at mid-day on 9/11/09. It was off yesterday afternoon.
