WAZX-AM 1550 Back to Spanish

Today (Feb. 10) WAZX-AM 1550 kHz, 50 kW daytime, licensed to Smyrna, GA, was running Spanish-Christian music programming with station ID and announcements at the top and half hours in Spanish giving out their phone number. I think they were calling themselves Voice of the Family or something like that in Spanish.

Say goodbye to the oldies and classic rock music the station had been running the last several months since they went back on the air! The last day of that was apparently yesterday.

I now have a preset to reprogram on my radio, but this might be an OK thing for the Spanish speaking community. I am surprised WAZX did not show up in the PPM’s. Where they registered? The 52 days in row without a commercial should have picked up a few listeners (I’m sorry River for that comment). With the large number of out of work broadcasters, they could have staffed the station for next to nothing. Working in the # 7 market is not a bad thing to have on your resume. Someday some one will buy WAZX and the two other stations that require it to go directional away from Atlanta and give 750 a little completion on the AM dial. In the long run, a couple competitors with a good signal would be good for WSB. It’s like a town with two bars. If they were within walking distance (same band) people would go that end of town and then make up their mind which one to go into, there would be even a few people that would try both before making up their minds. Both bars do better than the bars being on different ends of town (AM / FM) there is the hassle of traveling to the other side of town (band). A lot of markets that have more than one News Talk AM’s with good 24 hour signals have AM stations doing well in the ratings.
