WAZY GETS NEW PD

It ws my understanding, as it was explained 4th hand, that Purdue had bought the Frequency of 95.3 because of its coverage. The only way to use it as a way to boost WLFF ratings was to move it back to 95.3.

Purdue didn't buy anything

Hell, they almost lost their FM!!

Has nothing to do with the University at ALL!

Learfield deals with the sydication of Boiler sports...and AMP has the contract in Lafayette...to do with what they please...as long as they cover all that crap they have to cover

The contract is between Artistic Media Partners and Learfield Sports. Can Purdue be upset and make some calls, yeah, but it all has to be agreed upon.

The switch happened because they thought there were more farmers in Warren County. How lame is that?

Why should a Lafayette radio station even worry about what the listeners of rural Warren County want? From an advertising point of view......Warren County isnt necessarily a business center. In fact business there is pretty much dried up these days. Besides....when has Artistic EVER sold anything in that area for any of their stations? ???

Besides if a station group is going to switch a station...stick with it for more than a year to actually see if your 'hunch' was correct. The Rocket certainly benefited from the move to 95.3. For me...better to have two successful stations on your portfolio rather than one sucessful station and two that do poorly.

From what I've been hearing the past couple of years is that Purdue is VERY unhappy about AMP having that contract anymore and they are very interested in Learfield moving it to Schurz especially now that they have the ESPN on 1450 even though the games and shows would be broadcast on one of their FM's having a good relationship with the local holders of the only sports station in town make sense. But, I heard about Purdue/Learfield being unhappy with AMP even b4 Schurz got ESPN.

Just because Schurz has ESPN which they did to lure Purdue to the table, doesnt mean they are gonna jump ship. In the end, while they may be unhappy with AMP, they are still in the money mode. From what I hear is that 106.7 has been working behind closed doors with Learfield and when the contract is up, MIX 106.7 will become the new home of Purdue Sports.

Haha! I don't see that happening in million years! Any veteran in the Lafayette would probably have a tough time seeing Learfield with 106.7. And actually, although it was a thought to smile at that Schurz could lure Learfield over with ESPN, that wasn't a big reason at all for them getting ESPN. The reason why Learfield was/is looking at Schurz is simply b/c they hold a massive part of the Lafayette radio market with two of the biggest names in Lafayette to boot. 106.7? Nice station, but not Learfield material.

Bob Vizza is one, but who do you consider the other? Mark Allen, Randy Jones, Jeff Strange, Dan Somers???

Just curious.

I'd love to see Purdue jump ship. Anyone would be better than AMP... I wouldn't even mind them back on WBAA.

Who exactly are considered "names" in lafayette radio??? Obviously Vizza, but what constitutes a "name". There I believe Strange was here in the 90's and then left and Jones, McGarvey, Sumers, Mummey and um...thats it, I think. No other members of the WKHY staff have been here that long, nor anyone at Amp or anyone else at WKOA. What do we consider a "name" in Lafayette radio? And I think its Vizza, Mummey, Summers in order of longevity in Lafayette.....although Summers did leave for a little while in '01 or '00 I think.....So, again, What exactly is a "name"??

For me...a 'name' is a highly-recognizable on-air figure whose been in the market for a long period of time.

Those who would qualify today... Bob Vizza, Rick Mummey, Jeff Strange

There are other names in this market...but theyre on the sales-end of the business now like Fred Stuart, Beau Clark, Keith Austin, etc.

Okay... so before I left work today, for fun I asked 5 people who they think is the most popular radio personality in Lafayette.

- 1 person said "Mark Allen & Annie James"
- 4 people said "Larry Clisby"

Like I said, I just did it for fun... doesn't really mean anything, but I found it interesting that 4 out of 5 said Larry Clisby.

So, Harv doesn't even get mention in here? :) Even though he's kinda become a 'staple' on 'KHY? Not even a mention? If you're gonna mention Strange, you almost gotta stick Harv in there as well don't you? :-\ What about Gary Michaels? What about the Eric Burch? Not saying they're legendary, but if you're gonna throw Strange, McGarvey, and Summers in the mix....to me they're plenty of "names" around the Lafayette area, but only Vizza is 'the' name. You can take it a step further even and ask who are 'names' on the weekend, since it's kinda a seperate entity and usually weekenders don't last but a couple of months anyway, so that would make Matt Wilson and Morrison the only names from the weekend that mean anything. I don't know - to me a 'name' in the market is one that if they weren't there anymore, it would be weird and something a listener woudl have to adjust to.

Never thought about Harv - good catch. As for Matt and Morrison, I think they're better than some of the weekday talents I hear. I don't know if they're names per say, but I see what you're saying about the weekends being seperate and they have been around for years which is rare I think. Which I guess leads to the question WHY have they been on the weekends...for years???

Okay..so lets take the name thing to another step.

On Air wise who has been on air in lafayette the longest w/o significant interuption..

Vizza Mummey and Dan McKay...

then its a toss up cause some folks have left and come back.

I believe in order...

Vizza
Mummey
McKay
Summers
Strange
Jones
McGarvey
Harv
Marci
Tony B
Annie James
Mark Allen

Then its a toss up.... I believe that is about right.

Vizza and Mummey obviously around forever.. I think Summers came on board in 96 or so at WAZY. Strange was at KHY before he left and came back...then it gets fuzzy for me...

You HAVE to be kidding me...Marci and Tony B?????? Give me a freakin' break. Let's at least keep it to on-air people that don't SUCK!!!!

All right - I never thought I'd post on this stupid board, but I can't let what I just read go. Bill's right, let's try to keep the Names list to those with exceptional talent, not just people that have been on the radio more than a year or whatever. I think being a Name per say has nothing to do with your time on the air and only your talent which would certainly keep Tony and Marci off that list. And how does Mark and Annie rate below them anyway on that list? K105, a station so many people have listened to and for so long it's heritage compared to a station like B1029 that nobody listens to? Let alone the morning show.
