WB/UPN merger...what happens to WDBD and WRBJ?

The big TV news this morning is that the WB and UPN will merge this fall and form a new network to be named the CW. For the Jackson area, this will create a dilemma for the new WRBJ (UPN 34) and WB40. Only one of the stations will be the affiliate. My guess will be that it will go to WB40.
______________

Heard that they're streamlining all operations, with corporate taking over all sales and programming from out of state.. I understand local production people will be out of a job.
______________

Wow- no local people. That probably wouldn't work out so good...

WRBJ has only a local sales and engineering staff. Everything else is out of St. Louis. While some streamlining should be expected, you should at least keep a local sales and production staff.
______________

If it were me I would put Fox back on 40, and put UPN on 35 and 34 since 34 and 35 is technically not in Jackson anyway. Let 35 cover west of Jackson and 34 cover south of Jackson. I suspect your going to see a lot on new spanish TV stations or all shopping, snake oil infomercials and preachers.

Well, it's all a contractual question. And, we don't know what's in the contracts. It will be interesting, though, as the ink on 34's contract ain't even dry yet. It's more up to lawyers (DANG LAWYERS... DON'T GET ME STARTED ON LAWYERS!) what happens relative to net affiliations in Jackson than it is to engineers.

But, your post does hint to an interesting larger question. What will happen to the soup of terrestrial TV over the longer term?

As you know, TV is going digital. By 2009, all analogs will be off, implying, of course, that all stations will be digital. And, as you may know, that allows a TV station room for multiple streams. Since I no longer live in The Bold New City, I am not sure what WAPT, WLBT and the gang have on their DTV signals. But, here in the home of Elvis, and his Sirius Satellite station, most of our stations have mutiple steams, including, but not limited to, religion. I must say, though, the High-Def is pretty cool.

But, it doesn't stop there. Once the analogs go off in 2009, you can expect to see new stations begin to fill the newly-made holes. How many will there be? No one really knows yet as the chess pieces may be moving around the board. But, once on (and it will be a while), those stations will also have multiple streams.

And, yes... there will be more preaching. But, there will be other stuff, too. It's all too soon to tell, though, where this will shake out.

There is also a similar problem in North Mississippi with UPN-MS and WBWP TV-12. UPN-MS is an all digitial UPN affiliate that is broadcast out of the same building as WCBI Channel 4 (CBS) in downtown Columbus, MS. If I remember correctly, UPN-MS was one of the first, if not the first, all digital television station to be launched in Mississippi and is now carried in over 90,000 households in MS. I'm not as familiar with WBWP-12 but they are carried on many cable stations in NE Mississippi. Looks like one will soon be airing the "Nature's Cure" Infomercials every night with the guy who can't reveal the name of his book b/c the FDA won't allow it. I think you've all seen that one before!!!

That Kevin Trudeau guy. I don't mean to go off on a tangent...I know a healthy diet can help ward off or drastically reduce the risks of getting many diseases, but I would think that if that truly were the case, all people would be eating healthy to keep from getting cancer, high blood pressure, etc. Don' always believe everything you see on TV.

I'm certainly not against preachers on TV, Billy Graham is fine, and local sunday morning church services is ok, its the crackpots that get on my nerves. Its bad enough that you have vitamin pills and snake oil infomercials all hours of the night, but now the preachers are doing it also. I enjoy a good sermon, but what in Sam Hill does all these pills and diet plans have to do with the Bible?

The 1st Amendment. That's what.
