They're following other stations who will lose their network when WB and UPN shut down this fall (the new "CW" network will be on KBHK--now-UPN44; KBWB will get new call letters and go independent). Fox-owned UPN stations in New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis dropped the UPN from their bugs last week.

Eventually, they'll have a new name to go with "20," it just takes a while to reimage the station -- particularly when you find out with no notice that you have to.

Can they get KOFY back? Everyone pretty much remembers it as KOFY TV20 anyway, WB or not.

KQCA 58 Sacramento still has their "WB 58" bug at the corner of their screen as well as the"WB 58 News At 10", even though they are losing their WB affiliation. I wonder when they'll drop it?

KBWB TV 20 should follow KDOC TV 56 example!

I don't know about bringing back KOFY(or even KTZO). I think for TV 20 to succeed in the Bay Area, they need to do what Southern California's KDOC does with Classic TV reruns.(See KDOC thread below). Otherwise TV 20 will die a slow death.

KOFY (original call letters KTZO) under James Gabbert WAS a lot like KDOC, though they relied a little too heavily on Quinn Martin reruns(Barnaby Jones, Cannon, Streets of SF, etc). Early on, they did a lot of stunting - like those "special" weekends. One weekend they brought back dozens of series from the 50s and early 60s, along with classic commercials. When TV Land premiered, I hoped it would be more like that, but they seem addicted to constant rotation of just a few old sitcoms. Enough Sanford and Son, already! I'm not sure how much of a need there is for "Classic" TV, but I'd watch at least a couple of hours a week.

Actually I mean't reviving those calls for TV 20.The KOFY calls are associated with former owner Jim Gabbert.I know the programming is alike. There is alot of people with no cable or satellite who would want to see those moldy oldies. Look at KICU in the morning and early afternoons with Matlock, Andy Griffith, I Love Lucy, Cosby and Roseanne. They do well.

Actually, it was Gabbert who changed the KEMO calls to KTZO. KOFY came later.

Interesting reminder about the early dependence on the QM reruns, as KDOC did the exact same thing for many years, early in its history.

Re: Why they can't change their name back to KOFY-TV

Does anybody remember the station used to be called "KOFY 20". I like their name before they change their call letters.

There is no reason the new owners couldn't change the call letters back (they are unassigned at present), but they likely have no knowledge of the station's history, so I doubt it will happen.

As has been noted many times, on many boards, what any of us think they should do has no bearing on what will actually happen ...<P ID="signature">______________

It's true, though I personally think they should bring in James Gabbert to program the station. Bring back station ID dogs, and the movies from the Sleazy Arms Hotel! Of course, Gabbert is probably happy at home counting his millions and laughing hysterically at the recent developments.
