WBAB Not Listening

There is a post below about WBAB and their not pronouncing the Double You in the call letters. I believe it has to do with the people in charge not listening to their own station. I say this because I have continually heard a jock on that station say things that IMHO shouldnt be on the air. The jock is this guy Tony Pompeii. Just Saturday night I heard him play a listener call where he very rudely told the caller that they do not play requests and that all the music is pre-programmed. The listener then said that other jocks have played their requests and he explained it was just chance to which the listener replied "I hate this station". Now we all know that he was honest with the listener but I think if the PD heard this call on the air I wouldnt hear this jock on as I am typing this. I have also heard this guy tell so many bad jokes and curse on more than one occasion. It has gotten to the point that I have switched off WBAB so often because of him that I just leave my dial at Q104. I think if the powers that be at WBAB aren't doing anything about this jock the pronunciation of "Double You" in the call letters really doesn't matter.

What you refer to seems to be a pervasive problem with BAB, but more specifically so, a problem with other "Tonys" there. One with an attitude that used to also work there, and because of that mouth and bullying attitude, was forced to move on a few years ago, just to show up elsewhere on the Long Island dial and to royally screw up another station. Same mouth...same "Pompous" attitude...and not only just to listners! That situation has finally been rectified...as he was again just recently fired and no longer works on the island. He's gone back to screw up at a station he started at, way out in Jersey. And, sooner or later, the other Tony, the "Pompous Pompeii" one, will too get his due! Did you think to forward a copy of your email to managment @ BAB?

WBAB hasn't been the same since Bob Buchmann went to Q-104.
They redeemed themselves a little in the aftermath of 9/11, serving as an on-air sounding board for over a week, and as a collection point for truckloads of supplies. But as each long-time jock leaves (with Roger now being the last of the old guard left), the station goes down a notch in quality.

I don't listen to BAB anymore but I have for the last few days because of this thread. IMO BAB has had an identity crisis since Buchmann left. Lets face it, classic rock is another genre of 'oldies'. Much of the music they play is 40 years old (it hurts to say that). This means that much of their audience is at least 40 years old (it REALLY hurts to say that.) My point is that Roger Luce, Donna Donna, Fingers etc. know exactly how to relate to their target demo. Others on the station think that 19 year olds are listening to the station. For the most part, they are NOT.

Along with that, BAB has to differentiate itself from its competition with respect to its music mix. We've said it before, but is HAS to go deeper, especially when you can hear some of the stuff they play on Jack-FM, B103 and yes, on occasion I think WALK.

So all in all, WBAB is not a train wreck, but they are significantly less than what they were, and what their potential is. They are a respectable ratings performer, consistently in the top 10 and I expect they will pick up some additional numbers with the demise of K-Rock. They are generally in the mid 3’s but being local and having a good signal, those numbers should be higher.

Re: WBAB Not Listening - Identity Crisis

Not "pronouncing the W," "insulting the listeners," and "cursing on the air?" You gentlemen couldn't be more wrong about what's happening at `BAB. First of all, there's no law that says I have to pronounce the "W." If you want to intensely ponder something, try wrapping your head around 300,000 people getting wiped out in one morning by a tsunami. For your information, the "W" is mentioned at least every 6 minutes, including (the only required mention) the top-of-hour ID. And, not saying the "W" is about as acceptable as behavior gets in radio. I do it to save myself one precious second in an unusually-long positioning statement. You miss the "W" because -- well, only God knows why. As for anyone not liking my style, that's certainly your right. I personally don't give 1/2 a crap. I was hired for one reason: To get people to listen to WBAB(That W was for you. Feel better?). Like announcers at most FM stations, I'm permitted only a few seconds per hour to accomplish this task. And there's not a doubt in my mind that I am, indeed, accomplishing it. In my 16 years of experience, I've set or broken 20-year ratings records everywhere I've been. It typically takes time and a bit of creative freedom for me to do this, but it will be done. I do it by not "talking down" to listeners. Long Islanders have had a steady, brain-numbing diet of crap radio for more than 30 years. Radio in 2006 needs to truly "compete" with satellite, personal digital recording, podcasting, and CDR, or will surely die. We in radio can only win if we really differentiate ourselves from these other products. We can't do it by insulting listeners' intelligence or by taking requests that can never be played. If I have anything to do with it, all of that will soon end. It must. Thanks for complaining about a part-time show in a sub-major market. See you on the radio.

You are complaining about show content--which just sounds ridiculous. You certainly seem to lack a sense of humor. Do you get angry when you hear the word "bullshit" in Pink Floyd's "Money"?? Then, give this guy a break--I'm sure he's just trying to do an entertaining radio show. Nobody says jocks have to always be cordial to listeners--and for all I know, Tony's refusal may have been very funny. BTW, In the eyes of most radio programmers, sending your complaints about comedic content makes you a nut--someone they won't listen to. My "W" pronunication complaint---which he dismisses in his post below-- is a legitimate one, even if many people here don't get it. The moment you start dumbing things down, your audience will notice.

Well spoken Tony! It's nice to see someone from the station "listened and replied." I think most of the posters here are just jealous that they can't be on the air dropping the "W." :) Keep on rockin'!<P ID="signature">______________

I was thrilled that Tony responded, and thank you for it! I just went through the two different threads and only 1 poster in all the threads blasted Tony, and that wasn't even about the Double You. These posts were about Double You in general, and about BAB in general. So lets not over-react here. Keep it in perspective.

Re: WBAB Not Listening - Identity Crisis

GOOD FOR YOU TONY!!

Most of us read here and giggle about the posts. Sometimes someone will make a good point. but most of the time it rantings by people who wouldnt be allowed to empty the trash at WBAB. However some of these guys are well paid in the radio biz, just in the backroud, not hot rocking flame throwing boss jocks.

with all this yacking about WBAB, I spent sometime with the station, Roger and Jp, in their 40s, Donna Donna, again in her demo, same for Fingers and Rocky, both sound as if they have been walking the earth a few years. Some of the weekenders sounded younger, but not like a bunch of kids. Lots of other things to talk about folks, and yes the days of Buchmann, Tortora and Martier are gone, they have been for quite sometime.

Re: WBAB Not Listening - Identity Crisis

Roger and Jp, in their 40s

Just one quick correction, JP is in his mid 30's.

It's not about NOT saying the W (ie....102.3 BAB instead of 102.3 WBAB).....it's about pronouncing the W as dubba-you instead of Double You.

You're kidding right? prouncing the W was basic radio 101. A MAJOR stickler for any pd during an air check.

So what is this world comming to? How about having enough respect for the profession -to work on sounding like a professional on the air & not some joe schmoe off the street. oh yeah - what's what the world has come to - a good # of people on the radio now are just people off the street. my mistake. sorry.

Re: You're missing the point about the W

Freakshow: Not that it matters, but I've never mispronounced anything on the air; I quite simply rule.

Genius (NOT): - no one ever said YOU mispronounced anything on the air - you just misread the original post about the W.

'BAB has always leaned towards classic rock and classic hits - at least for the last 10 years. It works for them, end of story. Take a look at the numbers for WBON and it's very clear why 'BAB doesn't need to start changing direction. WBAB is doing very well in their target demo and even in the surrounding demos. Also, while not nearly as popular as Hip-Hop with the 18-25 year olds, classic rock is gaining in popularity there. It was also the only 'rock' format nationwide that was up in the last book. AOR and alternative were both down again.

Re: WBAB Not Listening - Identity Crisis

Damn,

I wish I still worked there. BAB is filled with nothing but class acts... On Air and Off Air. I moved to Baltimore to be "home". If the whole radio station along with the staff could move down here, that would be friggin bad ass! Missin the NY radio scene, just not the Yankee fans!

-Klug-

You were a class act yourself, sir.

Hope all is well in bal-uh-more.

If what you say is true about the jock not pronouncing the letter "W" correctly then that would be up to the PD to correct him, not someone who has no authority over his on air content. You are entitled to your pet peeve, I feel the same way. However I would not go on a public message board to call attention to it and embarrass the jock. So you don't like him on the air, that's fine. Why do you feel the need to ridicule him in a public forum? Did he do something to you personally? Probably not. Do you know what I do when I hear a jock that I'm not fond of...I switch stations. As for the other post about another Tony, that was just plain evil. Trashing people unmercilessly is about as low as one can go. The one thing you need to remember is that these people, like them or not, are human beings with feelings. The last thing they want to do is jump on these boards and see people ripping them apart.
