WBAI/Pacifica Death Throes

The fact that they are looking to sell either WBAI or the Pacifica Building in Berkeley

Where do you come up with "the fact that...?"

They're NOT looking to sell WBAI. That has not been proposed. The proposal to sell the Pacifica building came up in one article, but the building has not been put on the market.

Thank you, David. I do love the English language. Sometimes, you're not sure which side of the prepositional phrase your toast is buttered on. :)

LOL. And the Internet, as we know, nullifies tone and intonation. ;)

The latest report from WBAI's Treasurer states that the station's license renewal application with the FCC has been "stalled." A check of the FCC database indicates the application was filed over 2 years ago. As station license renewals are normally promptly approved, does anyone know what is causing the delay?
Since WBAI's license renewal is being held up, would that prevent a sale of the station, or possibly significantly reduce its value to a potential buyer?

YES. The FCC will not approve a license transfer during a license renewal if for any reason the license renewal is pending. Once the license renewal has been approved, the licensee is free to voluntarily transfer the station license. In the meantime, a station may continue normal operations with an expired license if the license renewal application was filed prior to license expiration.

I am not a New Yorker, but have followed WBAI's soap opera drama for a few years. Who needs radio theater when we can just look at the sensational reality show that is WBAI.

As far as I know, there is a pending employee lawsuit and a state investigation going on, so it's possible the FCC wants to wait until those two things are settled.

What a mess. WBAI's financial situation is going from bad to worse, and it cannot even be sold, for an indefinite period of time.
Furthermore, they probably cannot apply to change their license from nonprofit to commercial, till the license renewal issues are settled. So owner Pacifica most likely cannot even arrange an LMA with a commercial broadcaster that may be interested in leasing it.

The more I read about 'BAI, the more I wish I were in the apple.
Streaming is just not the same.

Ummm, I was being sarcastic ...

If anything, Pacifica's national board of directors is even more dysfunctional than WBAI's management.

You seem to be looking only for advice that fits into your idea. I think it should be obvious by now that such advice isn't going to come from us, since we understand this business called radio all too well ... and we have watched Pacifica's poor excuse for broadcast management for decades now.

I think a quote from National Lampoon's Deteriorata is in order:
With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal, the world continues to deteriorate.
GIVE UP.

Take heart amid the deepening gloom that your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
