WBAL 1090 Received in Port aux Basques (1/25/2011)

(what I intended to post on Tuesday): Well, what can I say? I did it again. I managed to pick up WBAL 1090 from BALTIMORE! before neighboring WTIC 1080 Hartford overtook it. That's my southernmost AM radio catch ever.

Good job!
Have you ever heard any trans Atlantic DX? You should be able to catch it especially this time of year.

From Looking at the map of NL, it's no easy car trip from where you are to the east coast of NL, and an uninterrupted saltwater path to Iceland, Europe, Africa and South America...an 11-13 hour journey at minimum. It would definitely be worth the trip with the right receiver & a couple of beverage antennas.

When I used Google Maps to find your town, it took me to a spot adjacent to a Mary Brown's Fried Chicken restaurant. Any good?

Newfie:
You may be interested in knowing that Port-aux Basques was heard on the
New Jersey Coast (Monmouth Beach) in November of 1964. 1370 CBNE,
40 watts! (CBC relay).
Two other low power NF stations verified there were CBNC, Stephenville,
790, 40 watts and VOUS, an Armed Forces (US) station operating from
Argentia, NF with 50 watts. All 3 heard/verified in 1963/1964.

Newfoundlandtime, you seem to be in one of the best locations for daytime AM DXing.

There's been a report of WQAM 560 from Miami received in that area during the day and I assume it was on some very good equipment.

There's also another station from Jacksonville, 690 WOKV that may be a possibility.

Even if you can't get either one with your receiver, you still have a good shot at much of the northeast US coast during the day.

I was in Newfoundland in 1999, and I do believe I did hear WBT. IIRC they were carrying a Panthers NFL game (preseason?). No ID but who else could it be? I definitely heard the two UK stations in parallel 1053/1089, then known as "the new Talk Radio." Also likely I heard the defunct Norway station on 1314 or 1413.

I gotta find that cassette....
