IBOC for AM is about as popular with broadcasters as AM stereo. FM IBOC as currently authorized, doesn't work as well as the analog signal in buildings. FM IBOC is now asking for a ten fold increase in power.

Bovine excretion - the 10 dB increase will penetrate another 6 to 8 feet into buildings. That amounts to one more layer of cubicles.

Seriously, I have heard some of the "channels between the channels" by tuning in to them on AOL Radio. If you can hear them online for free, why pay $150 for a new radio?

But with Internet radio, you get more choices of programming, vs limited choices on market specific HD channels. Oh and I seem to recall hearing the terra stations runniing HD programming, want to make those HD channels subscription based. If that happens, it'll pretty much void the free programming argument.

One of the many reasons I got an HD radio was to listen to AM in HD. It was like listening to it from the studio. Why, it even made Mark Davis sound great yet less whiny!

Except for KRLD (Which I now listen to for toh CBS News and the HD sound) all I have left is KAAM showing off that great music sound to my non-HD friends.

Except of course when they're not running colon cleanser ads!

Most people will have a computer and an internet connection regardless whether internet radio exists. I have had a computer and internet since about '93, well before internet radio. Having internet radio available costs nothing more (unless you hear something playing and end up buying it on Amazon :.. it does cost me money when I buy CDs of artists I hear on internet radio, and in that way it helps support the artists too so I can rest guilt-free!)

The biggest technical challenges I see are:

(1) Robust signals down highways, even in remote locations. Low band VHF (formerly
TV 2-6) fills that need.

(2) Automatic reconnection to a stream if the signal drops - without driver intervention.

I stand by my statement. Many (most?) people have computers and good internet connections. They'll have that regardless of whether they listen to radio online. If they do listen to the stations on AOL radio (and many other webistes) it's free. There's no extra cost to them.

It is doubtful anyone would buy a computer and get an internet connection JUST to listen to radio stations. They'll do other things with the computer that will drop the cost of listening to radio online to nearly nothing.

An HD radio is good for one thing: listening to HD radio stations. The industry is asking people to pay $100 to do that. Furthermore it's a technology that's not proven to be very reliable and is not demonstrated well in most stores that sell the radio. It's a tough sell made tougher by the fact most of the potential buyers can get that programming for no extra cost on their computers.

I know you believe in HD radio. You clearly have a passion for it. But your passion for it is not allowing you to see the obvious problems it is having in the marketplace.

Well... Showing the Geek that I am...

I have three main radios (I actually have more.).

1) My Shortwave (Radio Shack DX 395) that I listen to and use when I travel out of town.

2) My (Accurian) HD Radio I have in the bedroom to listen to (And help my insomnia).

And...

3) My Linksys INTERNET RADIO! It's next to the HD but I have "Modified" it with a battery pack to use anywhere around the house.

I don't like burning up my notebook to listen to IM. Too long to boot up windows as well. I'll sometimes use my Windows Mobile PDA phone to listen via wi-fi as well.

AND...It'll EVEN let me listen to XM from it. Even though I have my skyfi on a FM transitter so I can listen to it on WHAT ELSE???
