WBAP-FM and KSCS

There once was indeed a WBAP-FM.
in 1949 WBAP-FM 100.5 Signed on and played mostly
Classical Music. Sometime in the Mid 50's WBAP-FM
Moved to 96.3 And it still Played
Mostly Classical Music. Due to the Success of WBAP-AM's
Country Format WBAP-FM decided to Extend the Country Format
to FM. On January 15 1973 WBAP-FM 96.3 Changed call letters to
KSCS. And called itself 'Silver Country Stereo'. It was Originally a
Beautiful music type Country Format. As FM Listener ship Increased
KSCS prospered due to it being the ONLY Country Station on FM.
And As Country rose in popularity it Soared in Ratings. KPLX Came into
Town in 1980 to take a slice of the pie. KSCS was the #1
Listened to Station in the DFW market from 1980-1982
.
in 1988 KSCS Took Terry Dorsey KPLX's Star Morning Man. In 1990
KSCS once again became the #1 Station and stayed there for 14 Consecutive Rating Periods
Supposedly to this day that is the longest winning Streak in DFW ratings History.

There Now you got your History Lesson For the Day. And Possibly KSCS COULD Return those
Call Letters on 2 Circumstances. Original Frequency and Current Owners.
But his Could Also Support why KSCS Wont Take those Calls. also KSCS Call letters mean
K) S)ilver C)ountry S)Stereo. Im not sure if they will Use WBAP-FM Ever Again.

i wAS aLWAYS A lITTLE cONFUSED bY tHAT.

I've read in several sources that the switch to KSCS happened in February, 1970. Then I found an ad in the Dallas Morning News from late 1972 that announced "Coming soon...Silver Country Stereo 96.3." Chris Huff would be the one to ask about that for certain...he's a fellow radio historian (www.dfwradioarchives.com) AND he's the APD at KSCS. I don't know if I've ever approached him about that. ???

And thanks for the website plugs!!

My wife has an old Casa Manana souvenir program from August 1972 ("Paint Your Wagon" was the show.) Amongst the ads is one for WBAP-FM. Just text in different fonts:

WBAP-FM Stereo 96
Where The Good Music Is
24 Hours A Day

The program also includes ads for the old KFJZ ("When it comes to news, Fort Worth comes to KFJZ 1270, Flagship Station of the Texas State Network") and KWXI ("For people who've grown up, but not old, KWXI FM Stereo 97 Romantic Radio")

Another ad is for KJIM 870 ("The sound of good music serving the Southwest Metroplex")

And one from KXOL ("Experience KXOL's Summer of '72")

Plus logo ads for KBUY 1540 and KFWD.

Some of KEGL's phone lines still showed as TSN on Caller ID as of 2001 or later!!! (Shows ya how bad SBC was in changing the names on accounts!)
