WBAP on 96.7 is a Smart Move

I tuned in 96.7 last night on the way home & quickly switched back to AM.

The FM needs some audio work, sounds like the link between the studio & transmitter is slightly off frequency and/or over-deviated. May be something else entirely (I'm no expert) but just an opinion. Reminded me of old days, where you wanted to fine-tune the analog FM radio that had drifted off a little bit. Can't tweak anymore with today's digital FM tuners - that wouldn't fix 96.7 anyway.

To be fair, it sounded better when I left the office for lunch. Sounds like the audio has improved, at least during Rush.

Hey, if they sell one more ad that would be true. The problem is that he is trying to sell it as part of a well crafted master plan to do what is best for the frequency. It is not. It is a reaction by a poorly run company that squandered tens of millions of dollars of stockholders money and now is trying to slash costs to emerge from bankruptcy.

I bet you're right, Accuracy. This is probably a last ditch move based on Citadel people licking their fingers and sticking them into the wind to see what others in the industry are doing.

It's hardly "genius," as Mark Davis put it. It's a copy cat move from a company that's surely out of original ideas.

I must admit though that I'm interested in seeing if a younger demo ever shows up for WBAP-FM. Maybe in Dallas they will. But in most parts of the country, pandering to the racism and the homophobia within your audience doesn't pull in the younger generation.

Whoa now wait a minute. Tyler is no different than any other GM. He's just trying to do what the people upstairs tell him to do. If anyone should get the blame for this mess its the Citadel board members!

How nice to screw all the shareholders and yet everyone gets shares in the new company. Not only that but the board (ie; the ones who created this "crapstorm") get to keep their jobs!

I'm sure ol Tyler is not making minimum wage either so I'm sure he could be on the bubble at any time as well if they decided.

Personally they should have sold off non performing stations (ala 96.7) and used the cash to service the debt. And speakig of servicing have you SEEN THE INTEREST ON THAT DEBT? I've seen high maintance women that you could wine and dine cheaper!

Oh and how nice this all happens before the nextannual board meeting! Everyone who had blocks of shares (Hey you can be a major player in citidel at only .03 per share!) could have banded together and given a no confidence vote and had them ousted!

We could have done this before and I did vote no. But they blew so much smoke up everyone's dresses they let them renew the terms! Of course losing Hannity to Premiere and Paul Harvey's passing sure didn't help matters either.

And I'm sure Tyler, Mark, Hal and others have taken a bath ala Enron since their stocks are worthless as well!

Yes some great people were lost but we all knew what we signed up for in this business including myself.

Pray they don't kill anymore off and don't go automated!

(I should take this to the HD radio or engineering board but here goes)

Can a FM station with the stereo generator turned off still broadcast a HD signal? Just curious... ???

In theory, the HD subcarriers care not one whit whether or not you have subcarrier and 19khz, 38 khz stereo information mixed in.
Probably very few stations would be mono with HD, but stereo analog is not a prerequisite for HD.

Is WBAP 820 still running their hash 'n' hiss generator? Maybe
during daytime only?

The legal ID I heard recently (listening on the stream) was
at 11 PM CT and made no mention of WBAP HD or KPMZ HD1.

Any call letter switch yet for 96.7? The FCC site still shows
KPMZ, but it may lag behind until someone updates it.

How much of a signal gain are they receiving from broadcasting in mono, im in an area where their signals always good so i cant tell a difference

Stereo FM degrades the s/n ratio by about 22 dB.

I am assuming that Citadel cut the HD on AM due to licensing fees. A budgetary move so to speak

They initially cut the crap (I-CRAP that is) at night and during critical hours
on at least some of the AMs--WJR 760 and WABC 770 being two examples,
as they were I-CRAPping all over each other between Detroit and NYC.

Now why can't CBS learn from that with KDKA 1020 and WBZ 1030? ::)

So during football season would WBAP split the signal for Baylor. Would they have regular programming on FM and Baylor on AM, or would it be vice versa. If WBAP does not split the signal, would they ask Baylor for more money since its basically expanding their coverage area.

Buts its really not expanding anything. Where WBAP-FM Covers WBAP-AM Covers the same. If not Better.

Coming from a small town in NC, I was shocked to find after coming to DFW 5 yrs ago that there were no FM talk stations. We had an awesome station, WTKF 107.1 FM, and it sounded great. Now, after almost 5 yrs in the DFW area, I hear WBAP on FM and I have to tell you, it's a bit disappointing. Sounds tinny in my opinion, so back to the AM dial for the shows on WBAP that I listen to. Maybe I got "used" to the AM sound? I don't know, but I'm glad AM is still alive and kicking.

Ok so the "tinny" sound on 96.7 is not just my rock-n-roll beaten ears playing tricks on me. Glad someone else noticed this. Hopefully they can improve it.

Hey Ikillbugs,

I know WTKF! And most of all I'm on it! They moved to a different freq couple of years ago and upped the watts and its great! I think they bought WJNC out of Jacksonville and were simulcasting but I think it changed formats, got sold or both.

Your absolutely right, Shane and Ol Jack have done wonders with the format, the sound and the web site.

I've been very proud to have them as an affiliate (My 3rd affiliate signed up!) for all these years!

Funny you mentioned they changed frequencies because I thought I remembered it as 107.3 but I looked it up on the web to be sure and it said 107.1. They did simulcast on AM I remember, but yeah, the sound quality on that FM signal was unmatched. The only thing I really really really miss though is Big John and Swap Shop on Sat. mornings. Great program! Shane Willis, yeah I remember him, but Ol' Jack? He must be post-1995. Don't know who he is.

Anyway, small world eh?
