WBAP will be simulcasting on 93.3 FM

At 8:20 AM on Jan 3 according to a Facebook post from Josh Holstead on the Texas Radio Hall of Fame page.

Not disputing it, but Josh/Rowdy simply said "He read it somewhere". No link or proof yet. But something is definitely up there.

if it's true, then that means Cumulus has given up on keeping 93.3 a music station and wants to flip it to a simulcast of WBAP and i bet the WBAP-FM calls return to DFW radio at 93.3.

93.3 as a music signal just seems like such a lost cause. I'm hoping @Huff can jump in and say what the all time ratings peak was for 93.3. Merge?

Also I hope they re-evaluate an upgrade to Downtown Dallas or to Cedar Hill now that KGSR seems to be running from their less-than-C2 equivalent AUX site in perpetuity.

I’m thinking the Classic Rock format as “The Bone” was the ratings zenith for 93.3. There was talk that the owners at the time (Susquehanna?) wanted to purchase 101.1 and move “The Bone” to a Cedar Hill Stick.

WBAP was already tried on FM quite a while back on 96.7. Cumulus dropped it rather promptly, apparently just wanting to keep one talk station on FM going with Ticket instead. However, AM is just 10+ years older than it was back then.

Could we see Audacy put KRLD on FM sooner rather than later? 100.3?

It would indeed be a wise idea to simulcast WBAP on 93.3 MHz. Such a move should've been made years ago given 93.3's horrible ratings as a pop music station.

Cumulus recently gave its (also-ran) news/talk station in Kansas City a major FM signal, too.

I remember Bone peaking around a 3 share in ages 12+. That happened in the brand's second year, I want to say. Susquehanna then royally misprogrammed the station after 97.1 The Eagle went away the first time, opting for a playlist that overdosed heavily on late 80s hairbands. AQH share sank into the mid 1 share range.

i93 (milquetoast CHR) peaked in the low or mid 2's, which in hindsight, doesn't seem bad given how poorly Hot 93.3 has performed. I don't believe AQH share remained above a 2 for more than a full year, but I may be mistaken.

It's too bad Cumulus didn't resurrect "The Bone" (as it did pull that 3 share in the ratings nearly 20 years ago) or give it another shot as a rock station (classic or mainstream) to give another run for KZPS and possibly Alt 103.7. But with its weaker signal, I wouldn't think it would get too far within ratings and such.

It could've also given Rhythmic AC a chance as it was also brought up here but again, it wouldn't do much as well.

I think that simulcast of WBAP is the better option for 93.3 as it was bound to happen. I figured Cumulus would sell KLIF to EMF for a flip to K-Love but that idea might as well be scrapped.

Would be the third time for WBAP-FM in DFW, following the earlier incarnations on 96.7 and 96.3. You could say the fourth time, though the original 100.5 license was moved to 96.3 almost 70 years ago.

The issue in the way of an upgrade of 93.3 is short-spaced first adjacents on either side. A transmitter move will not solve these.

EMF may have decided to hold out for a better signal, especially since they are apparently tapping the brakes on new acquisitions.

"The Zone" (Oct 96-Aug 99) peaked with a 2.0 in Summer 1998
"Merge" (Sep 99-Dec 01) peaked with a 1.9; Spring & Summer 1999
"The Bone" (Jan 02-Apr 09) peaked with a 3.1, the frequency's largest ever, in its debut survey, Winter 2002
"Quality Rock" (Apr 09-Sep 09) only managed as high as a 0.7 in its five surveys.
"i93" (Sep 09-Oct 14) peaked with a 3.0, the largest for the station in the PPM era, in February 2011.
"Hot 93.3" (Oct 14-present) peaked with a 2.6 in December 2014.

-and here is where *I* saw it...From WBAP weather dude Brad Barton...Don't hang me out as 'The Messenger" on this. I merely posted the news from an insider. BB.jpg

Let us remember that The Ticket moved to an FM signal originally and it didn't work out. 104.1 I think. And then it moved to 96.7 10 years ago - and look at those numbers. Christ, their STREAM has double the cume of what KEGL has on it's SIGNAL. lol. Brilliant.

The Ticket was put on 104.1 to accommodate signal issues in parts of Denton and Collin Counties. It also bought AM 1700 to help with those areas. Neither of those signals was ever designed as a replacement for 1310, and Susquehanna was fully aware that 104.1 didn't cover much, if any, of Dallas and Tarrant Counties. 1700 was better at covering Dallas County, but it was purchased because of signal issues for 1310 in the growing areas of northern Collin County. One of the problems with assembling an amalgamation of suburban and exurban signals to patch holes in coverage is that those signals were never designed for that. Most people, myself included, aren't willing to work at radio to enjoy it. If listening to our favorite stations becomes too much work, we find new favorite stations. I might be willing to listen to 1310 on my way home from work and 104.1 at the house, but I usually wouldn't be willing to fumble between the two of them on the drive home. Plus, I'm probably more willing to do that work than the average listener!

If Cumulus puts talk on 93.3 and turns off the stereo carrier, it will likely help the signal in some fringe areas, especially to the north.
