WBAQ Greenville

I was in the Delta today and discovered that they are now soft rock under the moniker Light (or Lite?) 97.9. When was the changeover made? While I wasn't a fan of WBAQ's easy listening format, I gotta give 'em credit for keeping that format around as long as they had, especially when you consider that you can probably count on one hand the number of easy listening stations out and that a market like Greenville had one of the last remaining.

Back in February, Mr. Artman and the remaining staff posted an ad in the DDT saying "farewell', and implying that changes were on the way. I am assuming that Paul retired; I believe he sold his interest a couple of years ago to the Karr's group. That group in turn recently sold to Debut Broadcasting. For years I had figured that once the folks who had a passion for the original format had moved on, WBAQ would someday make a "logical" progression to a soft A/C type thing.

Perhaps that format is over...but there were some great purveyors in the past...
WBAQ, WESE, WLIN, WHER...all were ratings giants in their day...sad to compare what is on radio today...maybe there is a message there...Thanks JBI

I think the message is that those of us who could do the format and the requisite listeners who loved it and were extremely loyal to it, are now, today, all old men (and women). We no longer matter to the advertisers or ad agencies who, during the day, saw the format for the marvelous vehicle that it was. G*d I feel old.....

Doug...I think I have a few on you...but your observations are right on. Another observation, when will the ad agencies and advertisers understand the population is aging? The fixation on the young puzzles me...maybe because I am not young anymore? Come see us ...Thanks JBI

Did you see any of the MTV awards on TV last weekend? Talk about getting old! I just don't understand the appeal of thugs, dope heads, and airheaded bimbos on pop culture.

Gosh, I can't believe it. I'm 50 years old!! That's 1/2 a century... as my kids remind me. Being 50 with a 7 year old will keep you young (at heart). I remember WHER in Hattiesburg. "Beautiful music... just for the two of us." Mr. Furr would role over in his grave if he could hear what they are playing now. It's now "The FOX." We're talking head bangin' modern ROCK.

I'm a young (or maybe old) 34 and I don't understand why that crap is so popular. Also, When did the crap like Britney Spears every move become the news?

WBAQ was rebroadcast on FM via the cable system in Clarksdale.

Hey JB....Ad agencies are a strange animal. Most are crap, a few - very few - know what they are doing. I could talk til I'm blue in the face about agencies........mostly kids who are too hip, or think they are too hip. Most ad buyers in this town are 20-somethings with an ego-centric view of the world.....revolving around them. No touch with reality.

I promise I will come and visit.....still working on that.

Now, I gotta go to the other thread and track down Steve Christian. He still owes me money from our exploits in Jersey.....

As of about a year ago, Mr. Furr was alive, well and still reporting to work at his Muzak business in Columbus. Has he passed?

Funny Larry. Hey, I just assumed the Mr. Furr was no longer with us. He was pretty old when I was in college at USM. If he's still living, he must be in his 80's at least... perhaps 90's.

Yes Phil, we're all getting older - and balder! Oh right, you've always been that way ;-)

I remember giving Philo a tour of WHSY, one of jocks asksed "who's the old guy"? Maybe that's why Phil still holds a grudge :))

"I just don't understand the appeal of thugs, dope heads, and airheaded bimbos on pop culture."

You're talking about Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe right? ;D
