WBBM AM 780 IBOC off

WBBM IBOC Off at lunchtime today, sister CBS station at 670 still has IBOC on.
There is a raspy, unstable cracking following all the high-frequency sounds.
Not too bad sounding, but something in the audio chain is misbehaving.

It sounds for all the world like a failing electrolytic capacitor somewhere.
I wonder if the iboc-off is related to the noises?

Interesting. I have no experience with HD AM, but find that the biggest nagging problem with HD FM stations around me is that the HD can be off for a while, and NOBODY NOTICES!

IBOC back on when I checked at 1400.
No 'scratchies' on the analog now, just the regular hissing.

Maybe they were on a backup xmtr.

It is immediately apparent when tuning to an AM, whether or not IBOC is in use, at least with analog-tuning.
It's not the kind of thing you could ignore, being LOUDER than the desired station.

I have been told that some of the IBOC exciter equipment will occasionally and unexplicably crash. This could account for several unplanned and unannounced HD outages.
