WBBM

Does anybody know why WBBM always seems to be one of the most popular radio stations in Chicago? While i have heard the station, I would say they are not my favorite station to listen. They report the same news, business, traffic and sports reports every 10 minutes. And they do it over and over again, in less there is a breaking news story, or a Chicago Bears football game. I would hesitant to use the words sports broadcast, since they have always been the radio home of the Chicago Bears. I mean last year they did have the Chicago Cubs on their station, but this year again they moved to WSCR 670 after the Chicago White Sox left for WLS 890. I would rather listen to a news/talk station that still as news as the top and bottom of every hour with a host hosting a show in between like WGN Radio does, but there is not much left on weekdays that a would make me listen to them. I mean weekday mornings and afternoon, in less you like them are Bill & Wendy that have taken over times slots for everybody that has left WGN Radio pretty much since Wendy arrived at WGN Radio. And I have never been a big listener or fan of their show.

Easy. They get several short occasions of listening throughout the day. People are in, get what they need and get out. It's not designed for listening all day at work.

Stations can get good shares with short listening spans repeated often, by a large cume or they can reach a lower cume with longer daily and weekly TSL.

WBBM reaches lots of people for short times, many times a week.

It is principally a 35+ station, with 45-64 being its core.

Similar stations in markets like Detroit, Washington, DC, New York, San Francisco and Philadelphia also do very well. The station in DC is #1 in the ratings, and is the highest billing radio station in the US.

Yeah you would pretty much would have to, in less you like hearing the same news over and over again

Since the average listening "incident" is less than 15 minutes, there is no disadvantage to the constant repetition of the important news stories. The key is to provide valuable enough services so that people listen a number of times every day.

Yeah really and I would imagine people might check win a couple of times a day, or even like that they do the traffic reports on the 8s. Say if they worked in Chicago they can easily tune in at least 2 times a day for a traffic report morning and afternoon drive, I mean if you are not driving on the roads then the traffic reports wouldn't mean a thing to you. Or say if they plan to take in some sort of event in Chicago like say a sports game, or theater again even if you leave which you have to during afternoon rush hour to get there to attend your event on time. But then again you can get traffic reports on other stations as well there are news talk stations. You just get different traffic reporters that are mainly women, you only see a few men report traffic. The #1 radio station in Washington DC is it like WBBM that carries all news with no radio hosts hosting a show even like on morning and afternoon drive?

WTOP is an all news station.

WBBM may repeat the headlines 4 times an hour, but it's a 30 minute listen (if you stick around for the business) reports before the stories themselves are repeated. If a major event is happening that warrants wall to wall coverage, then that changes things. WBBM is a great product, and despite a great effort by WMAQ, they've always been a top draw for listeners. WBBM is simply one of the best news outlets in the country, and the quality of the product is consistently high.

Another thing that WBBM does is "cover more bases" any other broadcast news shop in town. Radio or TV. Even while still designed for people to "get in and get out", WBBM gets into government, politics, business, and other areas that are arguably "under-reported" by local TV stations, which tend to be top-heavy with gore, violence, scandals, celebs, and "investigations". WBBM also has a nimble staff of reporters "on the street" who broadcast breaking news live.

In short, they do a nice job, and the ratings reflect that.

WBBM does an excellent all around job. When WMAQ was all news the only time they beat "BBM" was during the Gulf War. WMAQ had continuous coverage of the war all day.
