WBBQ AUGUSTA....considered EXTREMELY SOFT AC?

I was comparing WBBQ to other AC's and man....how long do I have to listen to this station before I can hear SOMETHING from at least the last 15 years! I live, now in ATL and sometimes listen to 98.5 WSB and I've recently also listened to WTCB in Columbia and WSPA in Greenville/Spartanburg. WBBQ seems like they're scared of playing anything too modern.

Here's an example of the order of songs I've heard on 104.3 WBBQ just a few weeks ago.........
(check out the HUGE difference between this list and what the other AC's are playing)

(WBBQ)
The Supremes Where Did Our Love Go
Kool & The Gang Get Down On It
Sheryl Crow Soak Up The Sun
Ben E. King Stand By Me
Billy Joel She's Got A Way
Tavares Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel
Rupert Holmes The Pinacilada Song
Lionel Richie Hello
America Sister Golden Hair
Gwen Stefani The Sweet Escape
Jeffrey Osborne Stay With Me Tonight
Rita Coolidge Higher And Higher
Commodores Sail On
Heatwave Always And Forever
Samantha Sang Emotion
Howard Jones No One Is To Blame
Michael Mcdonald Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Snow Patrol Chasing Cars
Wild Cherry Play That Funky Music
Steve Perry Oh Sherrie

........out of 20 or so songs only a few were by somewhat current artists!

Now, here's an example of the playlists from the other AC's

(combination of WSPA, WTSB and WSB)
Fergie Big Girls Don't Cry
Daughtry Feels Like Tonight
Sara Bareilles Love Song
Celine Dion Thats The Way It Is
Alicia Keys No One
Colbie Caillat Bubbly
Jordin Sparks Tattoo
Elton John Tiny Dancer
Timbaland Apologize
James Blunt Carry You Home
Gwen Stefani The Sweet Escape
Amy Stewart Knock On Wood
Daughtry Home
Plain White T's Hey There Delilah
John Mayer Waiting On The World To Change
Fray How To Save A Life
Al Green Let's Stay Together
Leona Lewis Bleeding Love
Donna Summer I Will Survive
Natasha Bedingfield Unwritten

..........seems these guys have the hipper AC station......

MUSICALLY, IS AUGUSTA ALWAYS IN THE DARK?!

Personally I miss the softer ac songs and I also miss Lite 96.7 which palyed many of these songs. Clear Channel in their infinite wisdom killed our Lite ac station and really wish if WTCB was going to be the only one in town that they would be a little more on the lighter side like WBBQ is.

And yet WBBQ is solidly in 2nd 12+...which means its 25-54 must be, oh, kinda good...

Pinacilada? Do you get that stuff at the drug store? No, wait, that's penicillin...

Their numbers definitely show me that is what their audience is looking for and it seems to be working, now if they only had a live morning show instead of Murphy, Sam and Jodie.

Back in the day WBBQ AM and FM was an awesome top 40 station---better than any in SC. We used to listen in Sumter. Too bad those days are long over....

IMO, WBBQ is a pretty good sounding AC - the music is much better than CC's WMYI/Greenville, who seems to be playing more recent music lately. Maybe it's just me, but they seem to play quite a bit of disco, soul, R&B-type stuff from the 70s and 80s. They even played "Do You Love Me" by The Contours a few days ago....a song from the early 60s. Not that bad of a station.

That was the Clear Channel formula. I think over the years they have learned the market and the history of WBBQ. To an extent trying to keep a bit of the stations flavor from the old days as far as familiar music goes. The 25-54 demo isn't the target it once was. From a ratings standpoint WBBQ is looking at a 35+ audience. The 12+ certainly helps the cause, but I think WBBQ is more concerned from an advertiser standpoint. The stations success from the old days goes a lot further than just the jocks. Ed Dunbar, Bernie Florie made WBBQ. They had a crack sales staff to boot.

One reason for them playing so much more older music than other ACs could be the fact that there's not an Oldies station in the market, so they're sort of trying to capture some of that audience by playing a lot of 70s music and a few from the 60s. Just a thought

I definitely agree and really like their music better than B 106 here in Columbia, I just wish that I could pick them up better here in South Congaree.

I recall BBQ way back, during the 1340 days. "Handsome Harley Drew", The late great "Buddy Carr", and others. They were simulcasting a lot back then. 1970ish. I miss that kind of radio. WSGA, WCOS, WTMA, WORD!

I used to listen to WBBQ FM in Columbia in the 60's. This was before WNOK was 100k so it made it much easier. They WERE a hell of a station. Always good to know where the wrecks were, even if I didn't live there...thank you Car One. I even drove to Augusta a couple of times to pick up some of their music surveys. Still got 'em.
