WBBR 1130 reception

I was driving along I-80 in NJ going west on Saturday evening and I noticed WBBR completely faded out around exit 35 in the Dover/Rockaway area (I was listening to ND football). There was some other station with sports news fading in and out over WBBR. I was surprised to hear WBBR fade out so close to NYC. Any idea what the other 1130 was? I see there is a sports station on 1130 in Detroit.

There are stations on AM 1130 in both Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
Their patterns are more or less aimed to the north (Milwaukee) and north/south (Minneapolis).
Those signals send very little signal to the east/west.

The Detroit station (sports format) sends most of its 10kW night signal north. Their daytime 50kW signal is a bit more open. Maybe that was it (especially if it had not powered down yet).

WBBR runs non-directional by day, but is directional by night. They do pull in their night signal quite a bit...especially to the west.

Maybe it was the late Marty Glickman doing play-by-play on WNEW 1130 that you heard. ::)

I'd bet my VCR tape of Alex Karras punching out a horse ('Blazing Saddles') that you heard Detroit, Ansky. Not only do they come in at that time here in NEPA ; they used to fleck away at then-WNEW 1130 all the way into Laurelton Queens when I listened there at that hour. And one of those reception times was on a car radio, as was yours.

By the way, WBBR is one of the most widely-heard stations in Europe which broadcasts from the Northeast USA.

WBBR has a HUGE nighttime signal at night in the Boston area.
