This is from Rene Tetro, CE for WFIL/WNTP Philadelphia, PA and the Broadcast Engineering Email List....

Transmitter Supervisor Bob Janney at WBBR, 1130, New York City, 50KW,
DA-N, has sent word along that WBBR will be off the air as of 12:01AM
Eastern Time, Sunday morning, August 27. When they bring the
transmitter back online they will be doing an audio proof of performance
so look for a lot of tones once they come back up.

Thanks Paul for the heads up! Really appreciated the tip! As 1130 is kind of an interesting frequency, I thought I'd try and listen a bit with WBBR off, from my location in Poughkeepsie, New York, where WBBR is a semi-local day and night.

WBBR signed off right at midnight, and cut the carrier at 12:02. During the next half hour I heard 4 different stations on 1130 using just the GE Superradio on the kitchen table.

The dominant station was Spanish. Played a lot of music, kind of mellow, with a low key male announcer. I'm thinking maybe Cuba, but I don't know. (My Spanish is nil... and I didn't pick out any slogans or such.)

At times I'm ptetty sure threre was another Spanish underneath... one would be playing music while the other was talking. I have no idea who this is.

Also I had a country station, playing Eddie Rabbitt's "Driving My Life Away" at 12:24am. This was KWKH in Shreveport, LA, as I checked the KWKH web site a few minutes later, and the Eddie Rabbitt song was listed as one of the last 10 songs played.

And fourth, I had a sports-talk station. Not sure whether or not this was WDFN (The Fan) from Detroit or not. WDFN, however, really slaps WBBR around here each evening before WDFN's pattern change.

Was anyone else listening with WBBR off?

Chris from Poughkeepsie
