WBCN-1660 Dark

I am a little surprised no one here has talked about Beasley taking WBCN dark. It seems they sold the real estate. The STA says they want to keep it dark as long as possible in order to find a new site.

Charlotte does not seem to be a big sports radio town, probably why nobody seems to have noticed WBCN going off the air.

I think Charlotte is a plenty big sports radio market. It is hard to compete with two established sports talk stations that have a lot of original local programming. 1660 was pretty much all syndicated. Little to no locally produced shows.

FOX Sports Radio is still on a translator and the HD something channel of WSOC-FM.

It would have cool if the music format they tried would have worked.

Wasn’t WBCN 1660 the test station for HD Radio at some point?

Looks like we also didn't notice WGIV 1370 which lost it's lease at the same site has been limping along with 25 watts while they wait for a NEPA study at their new site. So the area has 3 crippled AM's 1240, 1370, and 1660 and as noted here few have even noticed. Who's next? Real Estate in Charlotte is crazy hot right now!

1240 is actually getting along quite well.

Now that I think of it, I was referring to its signal, but I've been told they don't get paid for PSAs.
Public Service Announcements are, by the industry definition, free spots, generally for community and non-profit service organizations.

Seems like it would still be easy to find a spot of undeveloped land where I-77 and I-85 come together large enough for a decent single tower for 1240 and 1660 to share. I don't know that I'd bother with 1370 with it's 45 watts at night. That makes it basically a daytimer.

Yes 1240 is doing well in the daytime with it's wire on the STL tower and 600 watts they have a good signal down south into Fort Mill, SC just across the state line, not too shabby! At night they get clobbered by noise on 1240 though. Ground radials would help I'm sure.

Getting paid for PSA's? Now that would be every station owners dream!!
