WBCN Fires Robby Roadsteam and hires Ian Robinson

" I was fired from WBCN... I won't go into the details except they want to focus more on their playlist instead of personalities between songs." direct from his blog at http://roadsteamer.com/happyland.html

I never thought he was that funny and he had the same jokes over and over again, but it is sad to see a guy lose his job.

Also I see that WBCN has added former MTV VJ Iann Robinson to its roster, anyone know when Ian will be on the air?

I thought Robby was hilarious amongst all the same old shock jock shit they had. Especially when he would make fun of the playlist by being overly excited to play 311 or Linkin Park. He's better built for FNX.

It always sucks to see someone lose their job...but...if he was bashing the music on their air, he, at least in part, has himself to blame.

I think the move was less about Roadsteamer and more about a change in direction for BCN. It seems obvious that they fear WBOS and in their non-talk dayparts they want to be super music focused and super gold for that matter.

They have cut their currents in half and have truly amped up the spins on the gold. It seems that they've played Nine Inch Nails "closer" twice a day for a week.

I do think its interesting that they didnt let Roadsteamer and Hardy just become a full on "show" and continue to the direction into all talk.

Wow, this only a week after my 14 year old cousin met him out at the Wrentham outlets. Roadsteamer was a cool dude, got a pic with him and gave him his new cd. Till we found out what the lyrics were like, then we took it away ;)

But that definitely sucks for Robby. He's a good talent. His youtube videos are hilarious.

I think that his humor may have been a little to "inside" for a mass audience especially in a large college town like Boston. A lot of people who live in Boston may have never heard of the orange dinosaur on Rte 1 because they are new to town or here for college. I personally did not enjoy Robbie as I thought his humor was a little "pretentous" (sp?) but it sucks to see someone lose thier job and I think over time he would have gotten better. It's too bad. I bet there are a lot of smaller markets that would kill to have Hardy and Roadsteamer as thier AM or PM Drive show.

I don't buy this at all. Pretentious humor? Just because it wasn't the dime a dozen shock ****** garbage on BCN that is just carbon copies of other stations. He brought alot of local humor into the picture and once he stopped doing the wrestling character voice and became himself he became a great compliment to Hardy who benefitted from having someone as sharp. The fact he could do the music career, and even grab an episode of NESN's Sox Appeal last year benefitted whatever station he was at too, And I liked the way he didn't act like he liked the whole playlist at BCN... Who needs to hear Linkin Park every hour. I think FNX would be a much better fit.

Robby is an incredibly nice guy....next time I see him I'm going to offer him a Santoro's sub on my dime. Very funny and quick witted guy to boot....to take a post from earlier...he does have some very funny youtube videos especially the one about the tecmo bowl.

I liked Robby a lot. He started just as I was leaving and I had a chance to do some hanging in the studio. He's smarter than he lets on. He's got talent, and I think would be an asset to a radio station looking to put together a "show" in a prime daypart.

He was hired full time only a few months ago. They knew what they were getting in regards to trashing the playlist. It must have been something different and serious.

It wasn't cause he "trashed" the playlist. He didn't do that. He had a way of being so overly excited for a song you could tell he wasn't into the artist but it wasn't malicious. In fact it was a great aspect. They are going away from DJ's with character at night over at WBCN and more music. They got rid of Juanita and put a board-op on overnights. Let the morning and afternoon shows have the personality. It's a shame.

When I was in the business, personality was a trait we sought out. Is it a foregone and obvious conclusion that the people making the decisions these days just want people to read the liners and be out in :30???? Now that some stations are starting the trend to not even have a personality in the mid day....I think I've answered my own question.

I refuse to listen to a jockless station. The reason WBCN is my favorite station is because of O and A, Adam C, T and R, and Hardy. I was also not trying to knock Robbie a lot of what he said I thought was funny especially the local references I live on the northshore so it was awesome to have someone talk about local stuff I just think there was a large segment of the audience that didn't "get it". I liked Robbie though I wish he was still on with Hardy.

Well it's a shame Robby has to be a victim of a move that goes against what WBCN usually went for in the past which was personality. His blogs are interesting too. He explains how he actually used his hulk hogan "******" type character to get the job at WBCN, and then slowly over time gradually became himself. I think that's commendable at a station that holds the carbon copy shock jock dj's on a pedestal. Well best of luck to him.

College students don't get books if they are from outside of the area...they don't have to get their plates changed to Massachusetts plates because they are basically transient. Appeal to the locals...

BCN hasn't been the same since 2004/2005...around the same time that Wellington showed up. (Too many changes...didn't give BCN a chance to survive in its original state after Howard)

Not that it matters...but T&R also seem to make fun of the playlist quite a bit also...

Robby does have personality, that is for sure. I liked his earlier comedy schtick with his bands.
He did do stuff on WFNX, as a guest on the morning show a few years ago to promote one of his upcoming events, stuff like that. He morphed into what he became on the night show. The night thing at BCN didn't seem like a good pairing. Robby was the funny one.
Has anyone actually heard Iann? He's been there a while.
