WBCN needs to be on FM

WBCN has been at 1660 for awhile now, but is not generating any ratings, how are they surviving?, with
speculation about WNOW's FM signal, i wonder if CBS Radio would consider purchasing them and moving
105.3 closer to Charlotte to give WBT competition?, i know they are broadcasting in HD on another FM
signal there, but probably would like to migrate to another frequency.

CBS is maxxed out at 5 FM's so could not purchase WNOW, not that its owners would ever sell it anyway. Not sure what their leasing options would be.

As for moving WNOW closer to Charlotte, they're is a 3rd adjacent to WKQC, which would have to move to 104.5 to accomodate the move. There's nothing locally preventing the frequecncy change as they'd still be legally spaced to WSOC, but I'm not sure about any issues in outlying areas.

WNOW on 105.3 doesn't have to protect 104.7. The stations were both on the air prior to 1964 when FM spacing rules were put into place so they are grandfathered and can simply ignore each other in technical filings. This is how WNOW got to the tower farm at Gastonia. They are moving into Darlington, SC territory when they move closer to Charlotte as a C1 plus still needing to put a city grade over Gaffney, SC city of license. Furthermore, WKQC has a much more severe shortspacing and that is to co channel WNOK in Columbia...both 100KW and both on 104.7.

Was not aware of the 3rd adjacent grandfathering. Thx 4 the info. :)

Why waste a good FM signal on talk? Right or Left all this political talk is like talking about the weather. Everyone talks about it but nobody does anything.

The 1660 signal isn't bad, nor is it hard to find, if you're really looking for it. Granted it's not as good as WBT's signal but even WBT's signal has it's problems at night anyway.

Even if CBS took an under performing FM and moved the WBCN format to it there is a very important ingredient missing and that's NEWS. Lots of people listen to WBT for their first rate local news department. CBS would probably not spend the money on a news department.

Greater Media would be the perfect purchaser for this station. 105.3 would be a nice home for WBT.

That has a nice ring to it. News-Talk 105-3 WBT

I agree that WBT would be prefect on FM, then what CBS radio should do is sell 610 and 1660, and purchase
1110, move WFNZ here, and put WBCN on 99.3, plus move the tower a little closer to Charlotte.

It would be almost impossible to move 99.3 or increase power. It is short spaced as it is. JP would have moved it when they owned it if they could have...

WBCN belongs on 104.1 FM,  Boston.

I agree...And WROQ should be on 95.1, WAYS on 610, WSOC on 930, WIST on 1240, WWOK on 1480, WLON on 96.1 and 730, WRKB on 99.7, WEGO on 1410, WKTC on 1310, WDBM on 550 and 96.9, WAAK on 960, WKMT on 1220, WEZC on 104.7, WHKY on 102.9, WGNC on 101.9....

@@@@@@@ I agree... however... Stack all those puppies on tip toes and they'll still have a problem adding up to the 42 straight years WBCN is "The Rock of Boston"!

Greater Media could move WBT to FM and make 1110 a strong local sports station and blow WFNZ away!

Eventually, all talkers will have to move to FM to remain viable.

105.3's signal is fine. How much closer to Charlotte does it need to be?

I agree that GM should purchase it and put WBT on 105.3, but they should and would keep the AM also.

I think eventually AM in America will go the way of Canada.

They're already short-spaced given WNOK's location. Good idea--except WRFQ and WHLC might have something to say. Probably WFXK, WBBQ and WQNQ would also have a reason to object.

Here's an idea. FCC uses income from spectrum auctions to buy out all daytimers and low powered AMs, or fast track them to FM when and where available. Then with all the new open AM spectrum create either as many new clear channel AMs as possible and/or reassign the spectrum only in cases where a viable non-directional signal can cover its entire market, day and night.

Of course, that would make sense...so....
