I hate to say so, but Top 40 and sports DO NOT MIX! If the switch to Top 40 is happening this year, then the Pats would have to find a brand new radio home more suited to its fans, say ZLX. The campaign to get Pats fans over to ZLX from BCN would be an expensive one given the late date of any format flip, and with this suck economy, I say it's not happening this year. I think that BCN is on its last chance as a rock station, and will make the switch on Thursday April 1, 2010 (the first day of the Spring 2010 ratings book). After the '09 Pats season is over, Gil and Gino should announce that the Pats are moving over to ZLX.

On a Pats-related note, just so that listeners have a chance to roll over from 104.1 to 100.7 smoothly, I think that WBZ 1030 should provide coverage of Pats games ONLY for two years - one with BCN and one with ZLX, with each station continuing its pre- and post-game coverage. A typical BZ Pats afternoon would begin after "Traffic On The 3s" at around 12:55 AND end with the last whistle, going back to BZ News at that point.
 
On Sundays, BCN/ZLX and WBZ-AM simulcast for 2 years would be a good idea. BCN as we have known it over the past 40years may be reaching the end as others have said .On a technical question how does their HD-3 sound for music? Sure it is in mono and not in stereo.

I can't get it to lock in long enough to tell. HD-1 and HD-2 come in no problem, but HD-3 is spotty. Too bad, I liked what I heard. Like the HD-2 "freeform", but wish there was a live jock. Somehow doesn't capture the spirit of the era when it's all canned.

WBCN HD-3 is not even on the air right now, and it wasn't when I checked yesterday evening. Where I live in Somerville just a few miles line of sight of the Pru, it comes in fine when it's on. If you get one HD program from an HD station, you should get them all from the same station. They're all really parts of the same signal.

They're not going to pay live jocks for an HD-2 when they're laying off jocks from their main station! At least it's kind of cool to hear the liners voiced by vintage WBCN jocks like Sam Kopper (the director of the channel), Steven Clean, Charles Laquidara and Deb Ullman.

WBCN's HD3 behaves very strangely. For some reason, I'm hardly ever able to pick it up with my Sangean HDT-1X, yet my Kenwood KTC-HR200 in the car picks it up fine, all the time. When the Sangean does allow me to tune to it, the signal frequency drops out, where the HD1 and HD2 signals are fine. There must be something wrong with something on BCN's end, because the Sangean does not have this problem with the HD3s on WBMX or WODS.
 
Can't tell there is an HD3 at my listenning post.....HD2 is spotty at best. I used to be able to drive around and listen to it but now I have to park in that perfect spot to catch a glimps of HD2.
 
I have a Sangean HDT-1 at home (no car HD yet), and WBCN HD-3 used to come in fine on it a month or two ago.

Then, I didn't check it for a number of weeks, and now I can only get WBCN HD-1 and HD-2. Perhaps something has gone wrong with their HD-3 encoding that causes a problem with the Sangean receivers. I get all other local HD-3's (WGBH, WBMX, WODS) fine on it, though.

Of course, there's always the universal explanation... It could be intermittent... :eek:
 
Today's Herald reviewed the J Geils Band gig at House of Blues and they said Peter Wolf got in a jab about the station he once worked for, saying that "“We brought (their first song) up to a radio station called WBCN. Back when it was a radio station.”
 
Definitely something intermittent with WBCN HD-3, at least on my Sangean HDT-1. It was there a few hours ago, steady with full "bars" in the display. Then I checked an hour later and it seemed to be gone, but HD-1 and HD-2 were still there strong and steady. Now the HD-3 is back, but it occasionally cuts out or breaks up. It sounds like the audio may be overmodulated at times.
