WBCN The Rock Of Boston HD2

Have been streaming it a little. The little I have heard, I can say the station is interesting but can't tell if in really like it. Seems to be a aor/active/alternative hybrid. Mainly focuses on alternative considering I never heard much harder rock like slipknot and five finger. What's do you like and not like about it.

Alternative rock is my weakness and enjoy the likes of Muse, The Strokes, Arcade Fire and Naked and Famous but somketimes I'm in the mood for staind or Deftones and while alternative rock is my first love, active rock is my third love. This makes my second love, classic rock. Nice not to have to flip the station and get my alternative/active/classic rock fix on one spot.

Only concern is it may not dig deep enough with either forms of rock. Should I give it a little longer?

Six years ago on the Boston forum, yet another thread (1/23/07 A slightly different perspective of WBCN...) regarding WBCN's chronic, amorphous formatting was discussed. If you can locate and read it (written about 2 1/2 years before WBCN eventually was blown up), see how much has changed since.

WBCN started in 1968 with an eclectic AAA format that quickly established a solid base of adamant, music loving P1s. They maintained a credible music format throughout the '70s. Yeah, they made mistakes, got pretentious and or did this, that or the other thing... But always managed to be your Rock and Roll "Gateway into Tomorrow".

In 1979, Mr. Hastings sold WBCN to Mr. Weiner, and therein lies a tale of a radio station (management) who decided to be all things to all people. They went AOR and tightened their format against WCOZ. Then added too much Classic Rock to counter WAAF, blah blah blah.

2013 dawns and finds "The Rock of Boston" on a HD2 of a foreign station (any frequency other than 104.1 for WBCN is foreign). WBCN HD2 has all the identity of phlegm and all of the audience that phlegm can deliver!

Can WBCN be fixed? YES!

1) Place WBCN back on 104.1 (even if only on a HD2) where they belong!

2) Strictly Alternative! No Active, Classic etc.

3) Most importantly - HIRE ALTERNATIVE ROCK PEOPLE TO RUN THE SHOW! When was the last time WBCN had a Rock and Roll SOUL?

Forget chasing soccer moms. WBCN is worthy of soccer MILFs!!!

Exactly.

They lost me as a radio on 24/7 P1, gained you and a couple of other casual 3rd or 4th preset guys, and sank the ship.

At least Boston has an alt. station that plays some semblance of the format w/ Radio 92.9 which is better than some markets with no alternative presence whatsoever.

Couple of quick questions...

The best Alt music (and station) on the Boston dial until 8/12 was 92.9 or 101.7?

Why?

Exactly.

101.7 was all about Alternative music. Last #s I saw for them was 1.3. 0.8 rating for the 101.7 plus 0.5 for the web stream. Not bad for an eclectic, major market, Class A rimshot. How many stations in any market, with any format can you think of that routinely pulled a 0.5 rating webstream? Anyone know what BDC and WFNX.com are currently rating for comparison?

CC is obviously going to segue 101.7 back to Alt. WEDX is an awesome set of Alt calls! I just hope that CC is smart enough to hire some of the plethora of on-air Alternative talent who were displaced by the programming follies of CBS and the Phoenix.

WBOS beat WBCN while playing the same tunes by better than a two to one margin. Why? Two big reasons: 1) WBOS was much more music oriented. WBCN appeared to consider music as filler between AM and PM drive personality and Patriots football. 2) WBCN had very good, professional personalities. Unfortunately, they alienated many music lovers including myself. You tune in for a musical selection and get dead air, followed by too many voices gabbing about a silly statement some clown made an hour earlier in the show. Just wanted to hear a decent tune and instead received a babble of stuff that I didn't need to hear and now feel left out of. CLICK goes the button!

2013 and "The Rock of Boston" is basically a forgotten tape loop on a HD2 doing the exact same snooze that got the station blown up in the first place.

Does a 19 year old want to hear Nirvana? Cobain iced himself around the time he was born! Lithium? Heart Shaped Box? Man in a Box? Jeremy? Creep (RH or STP)? Enough already with this Alternative "Stairway to Layla" dinosaur garbage! I'll hazard a guess that many more dials are punched away from rather than to these tunes!

WBCN was in trouble in 1980. They fixed it! How? They brought in Tami Heide and Eddie Gorodetsky from WERS and Oedipus from WMBR and created the SWAT team. Their youth, input and enthusiasm revitalized WBCN and WCOZ died the death!

If WBCN takes this opportunity by replacing the current and unnecessary Classic rock with EDM... substitutes the Active rock with Alt gold NO OLDER THAN FIVE YEARS (only 2008 to the present) and establish themselves as a solid music station aiming at an 18-24 year old core P1 audience... WBOS will be back to AAA and 1.5 ratings in no time at all!
