WBCN's Farewell

So, they've been running this fake static for over and hour, but lately it's been going from completely dead air to this fake static. I just heard a few seconds of the song "'Cause nobody wants to be the last one there..." but then it went right back to static. I wonder what's going on.

Maybe that was a moment of "Mix" being plugged in. I didn't check what 98.5 was playing, but it sounded like a clip of a song that could be in their Hot AC format.

Torrents are a nice thing.

I Wonder What Song Will Be The Final Song On Mix 98.5. Now There Playing Never Say Goodbye Which Sounds Like A Good Song To Sign Off With But Then Again There Playing Alot Of Other Good Sign Off Songs

That "fake static" you were hearing is most likely an STL (studio transmitter link) receiver tuned to the frequency that was being transmitted from the WBCN studios. They probably shut off the STL, which caused the static to be re-broadcast on 104.1. I am assuming an engineer will go to the Pru to flip it over to the STL frequency coming from the Mix studio by around 2am.

This is just my guess by the way :)

Update: The WBCN Stream Just Went Offline And Also The Static Was Shut Off On 104.1 And Now It Is Just Dead Air. They Must Be Getting Ready Because Now There Playing Songs Like Its Not Over And Move Along.

On the CBS Radio play.it player for WBCN 104.1 (for out-of-town listeners like myself): the 100 or so minutes of "static" have ended, just "Connecting" not "Playing" anything now. WBMX continues as normal; while the ID's on the CBS Player have been redone to read "Mix 104.1" & the website address has been updated to www.mix1041.com, the "banner" on the home webpage still reads "Mix 98.5" & the station is still being ID'd on the webstream (& I assume on-air, too) as "Mix 98.5".

You beat me to it, chrisradioanimal!

On the CBS Radio Player, now up & running: the online/HD2 version of WBCN 98.5 FM-HD2 The Rock Of Boston. "I've Got Friends" by Manchester Orchestra playing a few minutes ago. Also "Don't Trust Me" by 3OH!3.

I guess this justifies why CBS was playing "musical call letters" with that AM station in Charlotte, knowing that 104.1 would be off the air for some time...

Here's a link to download the final 4 hours of WBCN, saved at 128K to fit under sendspace.com's 300 meg limit. I've got just about everything from the last 4 days saved as 192K MP3s, but the files are too big to post online anywhere, as far as I know.

Will download this later. I heard the last two minutes on the YouTube link. Including a clip of Stern on 9/11 was an emotional touch.

In the Middle East nightclub in Central Square last night, Mark Hamilton was bartending, Hardy, Adam 12, and other staffers were there. As midnight approached, they asked people to be quiet so all could listen to BCN's final moments. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was a brilliant choice as the last song.
