WBEN goes "beyond reality"...

...by picking up an Entercom-produced syndicated show called "Beyond Reality Radio": http://beyondrealityradio.com/
Debut is next Monday and the show runs live 12a-2a.

Programming President Pat Paxton says "This is our innovative take on a classic paranormal show that is targeted to reach a younger and broader audience".

Uh, sure. That'll balance everything out from all the old Rush listeners.

Mainly competing with the iHeart Coast To Coast show hosted by George Noory. I guess they've decided it's worth doing their own version. "Younger and broader audience" is a slam at Noory. It's also very relative terms. It's not going to be MUCH younger or broader.

It's not the first attempt at syndication by Entercom, but the first in this daypart. Probably a good idea, considering the lack of listeners after 7PM. It gets worse after midnight.

So they will cut Savage an hour short and start Coast to Coast at hour 2? That's dumb. They are going to lose listeners 12-1.

They are going to lose listeners 12-1.

You mean "listener." As in singular.

It wouldn't surprise me if they drop C2C. Why carry it if they're doing their own version? I think that's the point of this. Drop someone else's syndication and run your own.

I mean listeners as in plural.

What would they put on from 2-5 then?

LOL

Yup. Younger people still spend time after midnight scanning the AM dial looking for new shows or format changes.

Hey, I'll bet they mean younger people from other planets!

Really? Who in the world thinks this crap is entertaining? Is Larry King the only man in America who can do a decent overnight talk show? I doubt it, there has got to be someone out there who can do a show on various topics of interest.

The reality is that the audience at the time of night isn't big enough to pay for Larry King. The truth is that it wasn't big enough when Larry was doing his show 25 years ago. That's why he moved earlier and earlier, to get on at a time when more people listened, at a time when advertisers wanted to buy, and a time when he could get guests to show up.

This show sounds like more alien talk with a different host and an Entercom badge. Crickets.

Clearly there's an audience for this. Definitely not me, but there's lots of similar stuff on the SciFi Channel, the History Channel, and even the Travel Channel.

Actually, I believe it was ego that ultimately propelled Larry to seek a much earlier timeslot. This took place at the time Rush Limbaugh was exploding across the country, and I'm sure it made Larry feel a tad overshadowed.

Too bad. It was a terrific late night show to listen to. Never been anything remotely as good ever since.

"Oklahoma City, hello"

I was talking about the move from starting at midnight to starting at 11PM. That was a network decision, to give them one hour of sales time in a higher rated daypart.

That decision was almost 30 years ago. Which is why you really haven't seen a stronger late night show since that time. No money to be made, especially when there's so much syndication now in the daytime. You didn't have that 30 years ago.
