One of the most respected programmers and radio consultants in the country is John Mainelli, who in the mid-'90s programmed WABC and made it the most listened-to talk station in the country in the final years of its ownership by CapCities. He warned (and I'm paraphrasing closely) that "You never want to identify your station with a particular party, issue or candidate to the exclusion of all others. If you do that, you learn how quickly you can be voted out of people's listening habits just as fast as a losing candidate can be voted out of office. And once you're out, it's hard to get back in."
WABC forgot that after he left, and it now has half the 12+ share and less than a third of the cume it did when he was in charge not so many years ago. I'd hate to see WBEN, a station I was proud to be a part of and a station with a hard-earned heritage reputation, fall the same way WABC has.
