WBEN is a disgrace

You can even come on discussion forums and "Say Stuff", no matter how inane. You may draw the ire, eyerolls, or derision of other posters, however.

I'm not sure that the FCC would have a role in such a decision. Typically the FCC stays out of programming matters unless they violate obscenity rules. Local police, on the other hand, could be involved.

Saturday in Texas, a cluster of Trump trucks surrounded a Biden-Harris campaign bus nearly off the road. Police? One patrol car responded, a second was late to arrive.

Proud Boys and QAnon are given far too much latitude by local law enforcement.

Imagine if a group of Black Lives Matters pulled the same diversionary tactics on a Trump campaign bus. First of all, it wouldn't go very far because the Secret Service would obliterate any vehicles that approached the bus. But imagine the on air outrage!

The point here is not political, it's about (selective) enforcement of the law.

Should Biden win, it's quite conceivable to imagine Limbaugh and local hosts ranting about the election being fixed, whipping up the local Trump militias, encouraging them to "take it to the streets."

And here we re-connect to radio as the subject and WBEN in particular as it relates to this thread: Will management step in if the on-air bombast encourages bomb throwing in the streets. Will WBEN act in the public interest, convenience and necessity?

"Quite conceivable"? Seriously? 9, put down the Kool-Aid. Limbaugh, Hannity and others aren't going to do something so dumb. Neither will David or Tom. Granted, some may try to stir the pot, but calling for war - no way.

And if Trump wins, no one needs to call for riots in the streets - it's a given. And many cities are already boarding up.

You have it backward. The Trump Troglodytes are the ones who will revolt when their leader loses. They are already trying to intimidate voters. That bus incident is just one example.

As for Commercial Talk Radio, they will continue to churn out the same garbage they did before Trump. Remember the Obama "Birther" nonsense? Maybe Entercom will give Trump a Radio gig(if he's not in jail)...

...if Trump wins, no one needs to call for riots in the streets - it's a given. And many cities are already boarding up.

Funny-not-so-funny, because that's a bucket of steaming horse bunk. Can't ever recall seeing a Trump tour bus having been run off the road by a voter driving a Prius flying Biden and BLM flags.

Back to radio and WBEN. The local hosts might ... might show some sense of moderation if their man loses. The national hosts will be a different story. They play to an audience of one, and as such, the local management team will have no choice but to let the sat feed roll. I doubt they'd have the fortitude to pull the plug on a three hour Rush rant.

They could also be criminally charged with inciting violence.

I'll believe it when I see it and not a second before.

What's more likely to happen is to see a station fire someone when their rhetoric goes over the line...much like Pittsburgh's KDKA-AM did recently when they fired Wendy Bell after she made a comment on air about wishing that park rangers should shoot protesters. That cost KDKA-AM one of its advertisers. The bottom line is...well, the bottom line.

I get that radio stations have to put on programming that attracts an audience so they sell ads to make money and pay the bills. Do they really have to pander rather than inform to do this? I know there is more than one side to an issue but we seem to have lost the ability to speak of the issues calmly and rationally without resorting to name calling and finger pointing.

For quite a few years I was just a jock observing what was going on in the newsroom. The guys I knew worked hard to get the news on the air fast and factual and I never detected bias in their reporting. I could never tell if they were liberal or conservative. I can tell you one thing, I did see a note to the GM from the News Director telling him to keep his Sales Manager out of the newsroom. It seems the sales manager was unhappy about the stories the station had on the air about the bad economic situation...bad for business. The news director was protecting the integrity of what he put on the air.

The news talk station where I live now is one of those heritage stations Scott talked about that has gone ultra conservative. It fits the red state but not the blue city. I see a respectable quarter hour for 6+ but the cume looks really low. Seems to me not many bother to even sample the station but those who do stay with it? Not sure how long that will last.

I'm very curious about WBT's future programming choices.

It's being purchased by Urban One. I imagine that could be an uncomfortable cultural fit given what most of conservative talk radio is like in the era of Black Lives Matter and racial injustice/police brutality concerns.

Do they address it, subtly and slowly adjust more to the center, or ignore it as long as it makes money?

The lunatic conspiracy fringe was always there, but so were lots of other people, including liberals, independents, etc. The biggest difference these days is that with the advent of the internet---and lots of crazy conspiracy theorists with websties that look legit, you have many hosts lazily going with the flow instead of shooting the BS down in it's tracks.

This has gone on for so long now, that you have practically a generation's worth of listeners whose understanding of history is built on layers upon layers of rarely challenged misinformation. Good luck trying to reason with THAT sizeable faction. And in the process of pandering to that crowd, most "normal" people have abandoned the format completely. I am one of those people.

Or, do they take another trading step and use WBT to get a station or two in another market that needs their specialty formats?

While in AM scan mode last week, stepping up from Zoomer 740 to WWWS 1400, the radio stopped on Tom Bauerle in rant mode claiming the current president is the best president ever. It bordered on parody, so extreme was it. But no... he was serious.

Or, do they take another trading step and use WBT to get a station or two in another market that needs their specialty formats?

Serious question: What company would want a highly directional 50 kW AM that runs a personnel intensive news-talk format?

Obvious answer to that iHeart. They love the 50KW heritage AM's and have quite a collection. They could easily add WBT to their Charlotte cluster and not have a problem. The FM's no.

As for Boauerle, I have no idea what he's thinking. I hope it's just a few reactionaries but it seems like things are getting very tense. Free speech is one thing but isn't there a law against inciting people to riot? I guess you have to prove that. Good luck finding someone unbiased these days.
