WBEN Manifesto, Notice Served

According to an electronic press release issued March 4, 2011 by Entercom Buffalo management, WBEN will begin simulcasting on 107.7 effective midnight, April 5, 2011.

“The addition of the FM simulcast of WBEN will significantly improve the reach of the station as the leading radio source for news, information and talk on the radio in Buffalo... While Buffalo is a strong AM market and WBEN is a ratings leader, the addition of the FM simulcast will make the WBEN brand more readily available to a vast majority of the listening public who spend time on the FM band... 107.7 FM The Lake’s music has been moved to 107.7 FM-HD2 and is still available online at 1077thelake.com."

Call letters? WBEN-FM is presently licensed to a Greater Media property in Philadelphia which calls itself "Ben (as in Franklin) FM."

Brad's manifesto did not cause this. It's been in the works for awhile.

But is Brad taking any "credit" for it?

I haven't heard his show since late last week. Been out of town so I have heard nothing from Brad yesterday or today because I was without a decent laptop to even listen to Buffalo stations online since I left WNY on Saturday.

I'm back now and will tune into Brad after dinner tonight. Curious what he has said or may say about 107.7 FM.

You're kidding, right? I mean, c'mon, George. Do you really think that Brad would make that claim, or make his audience aware that WBEN is now available on FM? You don't really think that he's THAT stupid, do you?

I don't see what this has to do with WECK. WBEN has no need to even recognize them. There's lots of people I know that will only listen to FM, so this seems like a wise move to me.

It's a shame they chose a frequency that, when driving through the city, actually sounds worse than AM. Good Call!! ::)

That was exactly my point in another thread. I don't get it.

And, I still have no idea where Wethersfield is?!?

I dont' think that the idea was to change listening habits in the city. The existing signal gets there very well. Their real target audience is in the eastern burbs, where the money is. And, if they can pick up a few TSA listeners, and even steal a little from WHAM, so much the better. The move also give them a presence for people in the car who don't even know where the "Band" button is.

I don't have a map (my vision impairment prevents me from doing that), but I looked it up, and Weithersfield TNSP is in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming County.

I will confirm that even by Wyoming County standards, Wethersfield is "the sticks". ;) Look for the huge windmills and you'll be close.

WECK and Channel 2 News are now "a team" according to WECK P.D. Brad Riter.

Does this mean no more news previews involving Maryalice and Scott during Sandy Beach's show on WBEN?

If it is an exclusive relationship with WGRZ, you gotta give Brad credit for pulling that off. Channel 2 is the up and coming TV news option in this market. I'm impressed.

George, you've been away too long. Channel 2 took a run at WIVB, and made a little noise, then started to fade. The only daypart that they win is the early morning. They've actually been slipping in the other dayparts. Ain't no "up and coming" about it.

Oh, I don't know about that, Sir Rox. The February book showed a tightening of the TV news ratings in Buffalo, though, as you note, WIVB maintains its number one status. According to Alan Pergament's blog, WIVB and WGRZ are in a statistical tie at 5pm. WIVB's lead at 6pm is less than a point. Yes, its lead at 11pm is greater, according to Pergament, but only because of NBC weak primetime line-up might be hurting WGRZ. With the loss of Mylous Hairston and a lack of sports anchors, WIVB's weekend newscasts resemble YNN. Right now, WGRZ has the most experienced reporting staff. I think WIVB is ripe for the taking.

Other than weather, WIVB has definitely been slipping. Their spending cutbacks have been very apparent in all areas. And the impending demise of Oprah may be enough to give WGRZ the lead later this year.

One of the problems with shrinking market size is that Buffalo is a stepping stone for a lot more people, and a destination for a lot fewer people. Channel 4's been hit by both budget cuts and talent moving on. The protracted contract negotiations haven't served anybody well. Without changes in work rules, they don't enjoy the flexibility that Channel 2 has with their people. That's one advantage that Channel 2 has as a result of breaking the union back in the '70s.

Channel 4 once had a much deeper bench than Channel 2. Now, Channel 2 has more bodies. Channel 2's staff looks much larger, but they list producers on their website as "reporters". There's also a lot more one-man-banding at Channel 2. Overall, I prefer Channel 4's coverage. I don't really want somebody "one my side", inserting themselves into the story. I want a reporter to tell me facts, and I'll pick my own side, thank you.

We'll see what evolves. It does look like LIN needs to recognize that they need to invest more in the product if they want to maintain the top spot locally.

Besides that fact that this is a radio board..I have no issue pursuing this thread to the TV side. ;D

Sir Rox takes the heat...cause I agree.. (so my heater doesn't blow the same BTU's!!)
