I'm surprised no one's touched on this, but according to Tom Bauerle's blog on WBEN.com, Ron Dobson, a member of WGR before it went all-sports, will have his own show beginning January 2 at 7pm, replacing Dr. Laura.
Thoughts?

Sorry to play along with this "unnecessary" new thread, but wouldn't it make sense to lose Joy Browne and move Dr. Laura up? I don't know too many people out of NYC that have even heard of Browne, while Dr. Laura may be controversial but has name value and many more national listeners.

Why Buffalo couldn't have a second real talk station (I never really saw WLVL as much of a competitor) with some of the untapped national talk hosts. Just a thought.

Answer: it is Buffalo. If you want variety go get satellite radio.

A very good move. Dobson's a strong personality and, as I recall, a guy who is hard to pigeon-hole on one side or the other of the ideological divide. He sure wouldn't fit well with the Fox News Channel/Rush crowd, nor would he be a comfy fit with the Air America contingent---he ought to keep them guessing and talking all over the area, which is just what WBEN needs right about now.

It would not surprise me if Dobson not only does well, but as a result, winds up in an earlier daypart a few years down the road. And if he succeeds, it would also not surprise me if the late night segment after Dobson's (9-midnight), which was once quite profitable for WBEN when programmed locally, could be filled by yet another local host.
