WBEN signal

I noticed WBEN is now running an announcement voiced by their Operations Manager explaining the signal trouble and assuring listeners that the station is aware of the problem and is working on it.

I wonder how long those listeners with spring-book diaries are gong to stick around while 'BEN troubleshoots the problem.

What's the nature of the WBEN signal problem? Is there still low-power operation going on or are they experiencing IBOC adjacent-channel interference from somewhere?

Interesting...haven't heard any of the taped spots from their OM, but I like to check that station out from time to time to see what they're doing, and some spot checking of WBEN's programming over the last couple of days here in Rochester didn't reveal any problems, at least on their day pattern. They seem to be getting their signal out to the east toward Rochester just fine, and the audio quality (as monitored on a pretty good Delco car stereo with decent speakers) also sounded OK. Haven't tuned in after dark in the last few days, though; have they got troubles keeping their night DA pattern adjusted? (You wouldn't figure a simple two-tower pattern would be that troublesome, but you never know...)

As well all know standard operating procedure is to never admit your station is having a technical problem. That alone leads me to believe it must be serious.

WBEN is the Kremlin. Greg Reid is Putin. Wenger is Dmitry Medvedev. It's the party line. Bottom line, WBEN is still on the air and apparently getting out to the east side of Rochester.

Actually a signal strength of 0 on the meter is quite a nice thing for WBEN

;D

Mr Vacuum Tube - are you a Svetlana made in Russia? I couldn't help wondering with 9's reference above...

I have graced this board with answers quite a few times when you all come up with your hilarious theories as to what may be wrong with this or that...

After reading comments like this, totally and completely disparaging my employer, I will no longer give you the real answers and information and simply leave you to guess and post your misinformed theories. While no employer is perfect, I take great offense to the level of unprofessionalism demonstrated on a regular basis on this forum...

I don't think there was any real disrespect intended. Many feel that radio today is a shadow of what it could be and what it used to be.

Спасибо!

Boy, there's always somebody who has to spoil it for the rest of us.

Nice goin', 9. Now kmac won't play with us.

Notes From The Gulag

I guess some people believe that posters who make mildly sarcastic comments about the Glorious Ruler or The Motherland should be banished to the Gulag. Hmmm... kinda' like listening to Bauerle's talk show. Wear a flag pin on your lapel and walk in lockstep. If you don't, you're a communist, unpatriotic and on the side of the terrorists.

Dear kmac. In case you didn't notice, this board sometimes trades in sarcasm. Exposing the pompous, pretentious and ridiculous is our staock in trade. Yet, at times we can become objective and factual. Some of us work or have worked in the business. Buffalo's a tightly knit radio and media community. There are very few secrets.

Aside from kmac's chastisement of my editorial comments (guess I should have used the sarcasm tags), he has a point about some of the theories regarding WBEN going 50kW and KB moving to Grand Island and yada-yada-yada. It's AM. Steel and copper cost MONEY, to say nothing of filing fees and attorneys' billable hours.

As to KB and WGR, I've heard the whole Big Tree Road site is in need of serious care. Ground systems, tuning networks... it ain't easy diplexing two stations on opposite ends of the AM band... plus that Cricket cell array that was slapped up on what once was WGR's daytime (self supporting) tower didn't help matters, though I'm told that problem's been squared away.

OK, I'm off to petition the Politburo for a pardon. Wish me luck. You may not hear from me for a while.

Hey -9-

I don't always agree with you (but that would be boring) however you always express your opinions well.

Isn't it all about free speech?

I assume when you own 110 stations they all don't get the attention they need, especially the less profitable ones on AM.

kmac:

Don't know who you are........I'm sure you're a nice young man.
Please be careful about drinking the Kool-aid, it makes it all the more painful when ones employer decides that one is not all that indispensable.

The posters on this board are simply exercising the privates right to gripe and using a bit of sarcasm to get it across.

CHILL!

Al,

You are right but Kmac is a young lady. I followed her trail of breadcumbs: http://www.kellimcmillan.com/

I hope she will come back and be willing to post her thoughts. If we go too far I think she has a perfect right to tell us. In the absence of information don't blame us if we draw the wrong conclusion.

Being in radio I would think she would be glad that there are people around who still care about the medium. I felt that way when I was starting in radio, working the all night show and someone called to complain that I had just given out the wrong time. My thought was hey at least they're paying attention!
