WBGM-FM 98.9 Tallahassee

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me when WBGM Tallahassee flipped from beautiful misic to Top 40? Also, does anyone know the orign of the call letters WBGM? I was told once that those call letters stood for "Beautifully Good Music".

Hi Mark,

I don't remember exactly but believe thay made that switch in the late 70s/early 80s. I can
remember that WBGM was always on in the dentist's office, including in 1976 when I had
to have my wisdom teeth pulled.

WBGM's sister station was WONS 1410, which played more of the pop hits but was not strictly a Top 40
station. In the late 70s WONS did go to a mostly Top 40 format. It's had a zillion changes since then.

WBGM became a pretty competitive player as Top 40, competing directly with Gulf 104 for some time
during that era.

WBGM is now WBZE, called Star 989. 1410 is WHBT "Heaven 1410" with a black gospel satellite format.
Both are now part of Cumulus.
